    Episode 16: Challenges

Traversing the Nightmare Warp was no easy task. Creatures of darkness hounded both their bodies and their minds. Laurel and Lumos had some difficulty moving forward. On the other hand Thistle was effectively protecting them with her magic. A few hours after their initial arrival they finally found the world portal. The spell master greeted them and ushered them into Zanathas. He seemed really enthusiastic and murmured how the city would be vibrant with energy. On the other side the city of Dahlnavar greeted the group. Immediately after their arrival Laurel and Lumos were escorted to the largest structure at the center of the city. Thistle flew off but kept close to Lumos who was moved to another place in that same building. When Laurel realized what was happening it was too late. The place they were moved to was the arena. An enormous audience chanted and shouted. Right at the center of the viewing area was the Queen of Zanathas who quickly commanded the silence of the audience to make her speech. The arena fell eerily quiet.

Parania – “Greetings one and all! I, Queen Parania of Zanathas, welcome you to the annual contest of might. This year we have some special challengers.”

Before she continued, Laurel noticed Lumos was sat down by the guards beside the queen.

Parania – “A man who proclaims himself to be a priest of chaos has challenged the arena in hopes of gaining possession of the great artifact that will be this year’s prize. On the other hand we have the would-be champion of the seven worlds, although she does not seem to recognize such a title, her name is Laurel, holder of great artifacts herself.”

Laurel was perplexed as to how the queen had so much insight into her.

Parania – “Of course, there are a lot of our own great fighters ready to see some action. So without further delay, let this trial of combat commence!”

Guards took Laurel away to a room while a fight started between two of the contestants. Inside this room a man waited for Laurel.

Percival – “My lady, I am sure you have a great many questions and I am here to answer a few of them before your fight. My name is Percival and I am one of the queen’s retainers.”

Laurel – “What is going on? And why am I a participant here?”

Percival – “Our spies have been tracking Gerthran’s movements for months. They know that our soldiers are some of the most well prepared in all the seven worlds. Gerthran sent some of his warriors to steal one of our artifacts. So the queen, in her wisdom, decided to give away one of them in the contest here.”

Laurel – “She knew that Garan would participate.”

Percival – “Yes, we also know very well of your own exploits. You are, basically, their antithesis. It is your balance that will outweigh their chaos. To do so, you must win this challenge.”

Laurel – “Not like I had any choice.”

Percival – “I am sorry that you were put into this situation, but the queen has gambled on your ability to succeed here. You will face difficult opponents, but most likely your toughest foe will be Garan himself.”

Laurel – “Lumos fought him before, this time it’ll be my turn to face him.”

Percival – “We trust you Laurel. If you succeed here we will be able to better support Entralia.”

Laurel – “Entralia? Did you contact…?”

Laurel was cut off when she was called into the arena. Her first match was up. Warriors from all over Zanathas came to the arena to test their skill and endurance. Many of them were chosen to enlist in the army, especially those who fought impressively well. This was what gave the forces of Zanathas their strength. They continually tried to improve further and further. Now Laurel faced off one such foe. A warrior who had been mastering the battle scythe. To counter she would have to use much of the dark magic she had learned previously when honing her skills to master balance magic. Despite knowing the stakes, Laurel refused to rely too much on the artifacts. That is something she was reserving for Garan.

Fight after fight Laurel was able to win against some of the best Zanathas had to offer. On the other hand Garan was moving ahead as well, which was worrying, but not entirely unexpected. The priest of chaos had an odd combination of spells that changed from fire magic, to dark and sometimes even light magic. Laurel observed his battles with intense focus. She knew that, much like Mikayla, the fight would be unpredictable. Garan and Mikayla both had an aversion for physical weapons. They both rely heavily on spells and magic to attack.

Finally it was their turn. The big showdown between Laurel and Garan had arrived. The people were ecstatic. Chants could be heard across the arena. The queen announced the contenders and the audience watched in awe as they entered. They met at the center.

Garan – “There is no future for you child. Your defeat here will be swift and painful.”

Laurel – “Make all the threats that you want Garan. I won’t let you or Gerthran get away with your plan.”

Garan – “Oh? You presume to know everything. Whatever you believe is our plan, know that it cannot be stopped, not by you, nor anyone who stands against us.”

Laurel – “We’ll see about that.”

A loud gong sounded and the match began. Spikes of dark energy erupted from the ground towards Laurel. These spikes remained and she had to navigate around to avoid them. To counter, she launched a wave of light energy that destroyed the spikes and hit Garan at the same time.

Garan – “Light magic eh? We’ll see how you handle that soon.”

Next Garan used a fire spell to cast hot embers throughout the area. Laurel crafted a shield of winds to protect herself. Then, she stomped on the ground causing pillars of stone to rise and hit Garan once again, sending him flying backwards.

Garan – “You’ll pay for that!”

They continued exchanging blows but Laurel kept the upper hand showing how much she had grown over the course of the battles. Garan was all but exhausted when the judges of the match were ready to call for its end. Before they did so, the priest of chaos had one last resort to pull off. He had been gathering energy for a powerful blast of light magic that he was now ready to unleash. Garan raised his hand and a large orb of light appeared and began to grow and grow. The queen saw this as an insult to the contest and to the power of dark magic. She used a staff she was holding to drain the orb and render it inert. The spell ceased and Laurel used this chance to cast a binding spell. This time she used dark magic. Mysterious shadowy hands grabbed and held Garan in place. Laurel was declared victorious.

Queen Parania – “Congratulations Lady Laurel, I knew you would not…”

Before the queen could finish an image of Gerthran appeared in the skies.

Gerthran – “I see you have failed Garan. I will no longer tolerate such things.”

A loud rumble echoed through Zanathas. Blasts of light magic pierced the clouds and hit the ground in numerous areas. The queen jumped from her throne and into the arena, helped by clouds of darkness. She ran to protect Laurel and created a shield with her magic. Meanwhile Garan received the full force of one of the light beams. He collapsed, his skin smoking as if burnt. Parania’s shield held but only for a short while. Warriors of chaos poured into the arena. The audience fled while the soldiers of Zanathas rallied to protect their queen.

Queen Parania – “Laurel, take this! Go and meet up with your father!”

    Laurel – “What about you?!”

Queen Parania – “I will be fine, this staff will protect me. They need you in Entralia.”

Lumos and Thistle rejoined with Laurel.

Thistle – “That turned bad pretty quickly. How is Gerthran doing this?”

Lumos – “It could be the power of his own artifacts.”

Explosions continued to tear at the ground. Parts of the arena had been broken.

Lumos – “We must hurry out, the queen informed us of what our next moves should be.”

Thistle – “I’ll carve a path, you two run behind me!”

Thistle used a ray of fire that pushed away a swath of enemy warriors. She flew forward, Laurel and Lumos ran behind her. They had to battle many of the warriors of chaos but slowly made it to the world portal. Behind them Percival caught up.

Percival – “Laurel! You should have great care when facing Gerthran. His warriors apparently wanted one thing more than anything, the queen’s staff. The artifact is called the Staff of Zanathas. We don’t know what he’s planning with it.”

Thistle – “Aren’t you the best informed here? What happened to your spies and all that?”

Percival – “That is precisely why the queen sent me to warn you. This is something new. We originally thought he was after the item the queen gave you, but we were mistaken.”

Laurel – “Alright, I’ll be careful.”

Laurel had newfound dark magic flowing through her. The artifact that the queen gave her is called the Belt of Darkgate. With it she was able to activate the world portal and navigate the Nightmare Warp with ease. Lumos and Thistle were impressed. Now that Laurel possessed all the joint artifacts of the worlds, mana and magic became as natural as breathing.

Now back at Entralia, elemental storms raged across the sky. With the power she had mustered she was able to create a small portal to Balancor. From there they would try to find out more about the current situation and then begin the hunt for Gerthran.

    Episode 15: The Storm

The Mindscape, a harsh and taxing dimension. Its colorless environment is meant to disorient and confuse. It is here that a large battle has ensued. The army of Jenehrtes is facing off against the warriors of chaos led by Mikayla. The priestess was aware that they were outnumbered and began to sound the retreat. Her tactic had proven successful in previous incursions, but today they met with an unexpected problem. Laurel, Lumos and Thistle were blocking their escape route.

Mikayla – “You again! Don’t meddle in things you cannot deal with! The artifact is gone already and by now Garan should have the Zanathas artifact.”

    Laurel – “I don’t care, you won’t escape again.”

Lumos had cast a large barrier that stopped the warriors from proceeding. Mikayla took it upon herself to face off against Laurel. Trailing their backline closely, the army of Jenehrtes approached. In order to give Mikayla the space she needed the warriors of chaos engaged the army. The intensity of the battle could be seen all around the area. Flares and beams of light flew around in every which way. Meanwhile Laurel readied her ringblade. Dark magic overflowed around Mikayla. Bolts of darkness shuffled around, at random intervals they would shoot towards Laurel who was forced to block with the ringblade. Mikayla also launched explosive orbs of energy, pushing Laurel back. In retaliation, Laurel used her ringblade to intercept the spells and break them apart before reaching her. The dark energy continued to pour out into the environment. Rumbling could be heard and felt across the dimension, its instability growing as the battle continued. Laurel continued to slowly close the gap between her and Mikayla. Thinking her foe had no other defense Laurel launched her ringblade towards Mikayla. Using the energy she had gathered Mikayla created a blade of shadows and deflected the ringblade.

Mikayla – “You’re bold, but you don’t have what it takes. Give up!”

A new wave of dark energy burst forth pushing against Laurel’s rindblade. Laurel held the weapon in front of her to project a magic shield, but little by little it began to crack. “I need more power”, she thought. Then, in a quick moment a voice said to her, “It isn’t power you lack, it’s the courage to take a step forward and go against the will of those who would do the world harm. You have these artifacts, use them!”. With the magic shield nearly faded Laurel recalled the great power of the cold flames that she could conjure and used them to spread around Mikayla’s feet. In response the priestess of chaos had to jump away and hover using her magic. Next Laurel made her boots lighten with the Emerald of Winds. A quick run at Mikayla caught her off guard, the very wind that Laurel carried with her knocked the priestess down.

    Mikayla – “Chaos consume you!”

With those words a storm of dark energy surrounded them, but by this moment Laurel had let go of her fear.

Laurel – “The balance within me is not what it was when I faced Gerthran before. It is much greater and I will prove it to you!”

Laurel held her ringblade above her raised right hand. With her left hand she charged  light energy. This energy then started to move to the ringblade and spin opposite of the energy that Mikayla was releasing. Then, when there was enough energy, Laurel sent the ringblade flying at the priestess who tried, in vain, to contain the blow. She screamed in pain, her robes were torn away revealing an armor that deflected the ringblade. Mikayla felt victorious but was unaware of the damage she had incurred. The storm of dark magic that she had been conjuring was dissipating. Her own tether to dark magic had been disabled. The realization made Mikayla lose her breath. Her vision blurred as Laurel neared. For the first time in years the priestess was afraid.

Mikayla – “Well then… I suppose you will kill me now.”

Laurel – “I think I will let the soldiers of Jenehrtes deal with with you.”

Standing in front of Mikayla, Laurel chanted and cast a spell that caused chains of light to burst from the ground and hold the priestess of chaos down. Her very spirit was tethered to that place and until the spell was released she would not be able to move.

With their leader defeated the warriors of chaos lost their will to fight. Many of them were taken prisoner. Lumos and Thistle helped to fight those who continued with their violence. When the battle had ended a woman approached Laurel.

Woman – “Well done. Thank you for your aid in this endeavor. I am Mariella, Queen of Jenehrtes.”

Laurel – “Oh, goodness, uhh, hi.”

Lumos – “My Queen, I am Lumos, this here is Thistle and she is Laurel.”

Mariella – “The great sage, it is an honor. Your reputation precedes you. Again, thank you for aiding us.”

Lumos – “Indeed, but I am afraid we are here for more than platitudes.”

Mariella – “Yes, I have been informed of your little collection. Young lady you carry more than just big burdens with those artifacts in hand. Such power can be dangerous, unless your balance is perfected.”

Laurel – “I’ve been working on that.”

Mariella – “I am sure you will have no trouble with the artifact I will give you. Come, join me at Lirivan.”

Thistle – “Ohh, we’re going to the capital! This is going to be interesting.”

The Queen had access to very powerful light magic spells. One of which could easily warp the Mindscape and grant access to any destination on Jenehrtes. She easily created a portal to reach the capital.

Once the group arrived at the city, they quickly made their way to the castle. Glass, crystals and gems adorned many of the castle walls. Strands of light energy flowed through the gems, taking their color and continuing on their way. The marble city of Lirivan was quite the impressive sight. Thistle was particularly impressed. The architecture here was ordered, highly geometric and precise. Inside the castle Mariella addressed Laurel, Lumos and Thistle.

Mariella – “Your presence at the battle within the Mindscape helped us earn victory. Those who would sully our world of light with their chaos will be punished. Lady laurel, you have more than earned this, the Necklace of Lightgate.”

Laurel – “Thank you Queen Mariella.”

The necklace flew towards Laurel of its own accord, it placed itself around her neck letting out a bright flash as it did so.

Mariella – “You are someone special, Laurel. The artifacts you hold bind themselves to you, in a way of their own mysterious will.”

Lumos – “Do you know why this is?”

Mairella – “It should become more clear as you gain the final artifact.”

Thistle – “Final? How can you be sure the next one will be the last?”

Laurel – “I think I know what she means, the next artifact is in Zanathas. All we have collected so far are the joint artifacts of the worlds.”

Mariella – “Indeed, as Queen of Jenehrtes I possess ancestral knowledge that I can access. Although it is not always reliable, due to the nature of our spirits, it can provide great insight.”

Lumos – “The spirits…, would that explain the troubles Jenehrtes has had in changing the rule to a council?”

Mariella – “Correct, but such a matter is now unimportant. You should continue to Zanathas.”

Laurel – “Thank you once again Queen Mariella.”

Lumos – “We should hurry to the Warp.”

Mariella – “There is an area of Jenehrtes that can provide a portal to the Nightmare Warp. It is close to the world portal, go to it.”

    Thistle – “Got it!”

Laurel, Lumos and Thistle bid their farewells to Queen Mariella of Jenehrtes and left the castle. On their way to the world portal Lumos recounted how Mariella was renowned for her calm and level headed demeanor. The ancestral knowledge is a source of great power as it gives the rulers of Jenehrtes a litany of spells unknown to many. Mikayla will not have an easy time as a prisoner here.

When they reached their destination a soldier directed them to where they needed to be in order to access the Nightmare Warp. The Warp is a dimension that mirrors the Mindscape and is filled with dark magic. Within it the world portal to Zanathas can be found. It is in this world that Laurel should be able to acquire the final artifact, as revealed by the mural in Rallion and confirmed by the Queen of Jenehrtes.

    Episode 14: The Calm

The village of Helmar, located at the outer edge of the forest near Scillion, was Laurel’s first stop on her trip back to Balancor. From there she booked passage with a transport wagon to the next village, Tiris. Their arrival was around midday so they had some time to spend before they could travel again. Tiris was very close to the plains where the altar for the legendary Twins of Power was found. Laurel decided she would pay a visit to it. When she arrived she noticed a number of wolves surrounding her. The weapons were dull and blackened, their power sealed away. One of the wolves approached.

Wolf – “You there! State your business here.”

Laurel – “I’ve come to pay my respects, and perhaps ask for wisdom in the coming battle.”

    Wolf – “Is that so?”

The wolf let out a powerful howl. From the group emerged another even larger wolf. He introduced himself as Arglis.

Laurel – “Hello, my name is Laurel and I seek Lidya’s wisdom.”

Arglis – “Well, as you can see she is not here, but I knew of her, through my father Argaun.”

Laurel – “So is this his tribe? You’re the guardians of the Twins of Power?”

Arglis – “We are. My father founded the tribe when he settled here. He considered protecting these weapons a favor for Lidya. She freed us and in return we protect her legacy.”

Thistle – “You seem like a scary bunch.”

Arglis – “Ah, a wisp. My father told me of a companion they had, her name was Thisir. Lidya, Thisir, my father and a dragon named Zethia traveled Entralia seeking to right many wrongs. Their battles were intense and they ended up overthrowing a great evil that sought to newly enslave the Sentients.”

    Thistle – “So that’s her name…”

Laurel – “Had you heard of that wisp before, Thistle?”

Thistle – “Only rumors. It was a long time ago. Wisps are aloof Laurel, we rarely meet and it’s even more rare to exchange stories. This wisp probably spent all her time with Lidya, which must have been pretty awesome.”

Arglis – “Indeed, their adventures are still passed on in some tribes.”

Laurel – “Did you know her personally, Arglis?”

Arglis – “I met her multiple times while traveling with father. A formidable Warrior, even without the weapon of power. Her greatest strength was her outstanding courage and her trust in her companions.”

Laurel – “Well, my current situation seems to put everything on my shoulders.”

Arglis – “You possess items of great power. I could sense them as you approached. All I can tell you is that you must trust yourself as well as the people who have placed their hopes on you. They will give you the necessary courage.”

    Laurel – “Thank you Arglis.”

Thistle – “Laurel, we should continue to Balancor.”

Arglis – “Since you came all this way to visit the altar, I feel I must provide more than just encouraging words. I will take you to Balancor.”

Using his magic Arglis lifted Laurel into the air and launched her to his back. A summoned harness appeared and she landed safely on it. He said, “Hang on tight!”, and sprinted away at high speed. Then stopped.

Thistle – “Hey Arglis, Balancor is the other way!”

Arglis realized it had been a long time since he visited the city, and Thistle was right, so instead she led the way while Arglis followed closely.

The arrival of Laurel was a surprise. Arglis and Laurel were flanked by four other wolves, two on each side. People watched in awe as the wolves ran through one of the central roads toward the council chambers. Their arrival at the chambers caught everyone by surprise. A startled Lumos and Lindrel looked on as Laurel got off Arglis.

Lindrel – “Goodness Laurel! What is going on?”

Laurel – “Well, considering the urgency required for the current matters Arglis volunteered to bring me here.”

Arglis – “Apologies for startling you. Laurel, stay safe and remember what I told you.”

Arglis and the other wolves ran off to return to their home.

Lumos – “Spectacular, you made friends with the tribe of Argaun.”

Laurel – “Yes, I wanted to visit the altar of the Twins of Power. Twin axes stuck there, withered and powerless. We have to take a stand against Gerthran!”

Lindrel – “We have been discussing this matter for some time now dear. Although we haven’t shored up our troops, it doesn’t mean we aren’t doing anything.”

Laurel – “Dad, council members, you’d better move faster. Gerthran was at Grentis. People died. His next target is Zanathas and Jenehrtes. If he gains those last artifacts we might not be able to stop him.”

Lumos – “It seems we have lost the luxury of time. Laurel, let’s go to Jenehrtes together. Lord Lindrel, I have stayed here long enough, and the politics of this all has kept us running around in circles. Please make sure that we have the necessary troops once Gerthran makes his inevitable attack.”

Lindrel – “Members of the council, we will adjourn for now, but remember the stakes. When we return, a vote must be passed to enable our soldiers to begin a garrison at the ancient site of Cythia’s world portal. Lumos, go with her, you’ve done all you can here.”

Lumos – “Yes, I’ve rested well these days, though there is no comfort in what is likely to come for us in the near future.”

Laurel – “It’ll be nighttime in a little while, we should go home and prepare for tomorrow’s trip.”

Thistle – “It has been some time since we were home.”

Lumos – “Let’s get going then.”

Laurel arrived at her home along with Thistle and Lumos. Lord Lindrel remained at the council chamber for a while longer to speak to the other members. Thistle lit some candles and a lantern. Lumos sat down while Laurel explained what had happened in the ruins of Scillion and at the depths of Kalvar.

Lumos – “It seems that tomorrow we will have to head out at the break of dawn. Gerthran must be close to releasing Cythia.”

Laurel – “We should rest while we have the chance. Dad should be arriving soon.”

Thistle – “I’ll head outside and keep watch.”

About an hour after Laurel and Lumos went to sleep Lindrel arrived. He stopped at the entrance to speak with Thistle.

Thistle – “You’re worried about Laurel, correct?”

Lindrel – “Greatly worried. Have I put too much on her shoulders?”

Thistle – “Laurel knew the responsibility you gave her. The artifacts choosing her was no coincidence either. They’re bound to her because she has had the strength to carry on.”

Lindrel – “I’m afraid of what she may need to do eventually if she faces Gerthran again.”

Thistle – “She already lost once, but she knows she can’t risk another loss like that. I’m sure that the ancient knowledge that she has earned will guide her further than any of us. None of that matters though, I’m sure you, Lumos and I won’t ever leave her alone in all this.”

Lindrel – “I feel like I have. Since her mother’s disappearance she has been very helpful and independent. I fear I’m not doing enough.”

Thistle – “It will be enough when the army of Entralia marches against Gerthran.”

Lindrel – “Entralia has never had a large army to begin with Thistle. We are mustering what forces we have, but I’m afraid it will not be sufficient.”

Thistle – “At this point we won’t know for sure, but any help will tip the balance in our favor.”

Lindrel – “Well said. Now then, I should head in and rest.”

Thistle – “Don’t worry Lord Lindrel, I will do my best to keep her safe.”

    Lindrel – “Thank you Thistle.”

As Lindrel retired to rest, Thistle flew high up above the house. The crowded community was an interesting sight. She looked all around her, admiring the city. “None of this can go to waste”, she thought, “I have to protect her, so that she, in turn, protects us all”. Just as she was lost in thought a bright light shone from afar. Thistle focused on it for a short time, the light was moving towards her. She recognized the light as another wisp, which stopped in front of her. The wisp, overflowing with wind magic, introduced herself as Thisir.

Thistle – “Wait, the same one Arglis told us about?”

Thisir – “Heh, sounds like you met Argaun’s son. Yes, I am indeed that same wisp that traveled with Lidya. I’ve been traversing the ether for some time now. Things started to feel off though, so I decided to come here. I was headed to investigate the Twins of Power, but noticed you here. You know how rare it is for us to meet.”

Thistle – “Yeah, it seems that there’s a big confrontation coming and I’m a bit shaken to be honest.”

Thisir – “I know the feeling. Lidya and I faced great challenges in the past. You will eventually learn to ignore it.”

Thistle – “Lidya was lucky to have you.”

Thisir – “I’m sure your friends are lucky to have you as well, now then, I gotta go. Arglis won’t be expecting me and I want to startle him hehe.”

Thistle – “Alright, hope I can see you again!”

    Thisir – “Stay safe!”

Thisir faded into the distance. Thistle was glad she could meet her, especially after hearing about her from Arglis. She was curious about the ether, said to be a sort of alternate dimension that only wisps can journey into. Perhaps sometime in the future, Thistle can accompany Thisir and learn from her.

  • 7 Worlds: Explorations – Ep13

Episode 13: The Depths of Kalvar

A vast and lush jungle spread before Laurel. A brick road full of moss marked the path forward. Orlin motioned Laurel and Thistle to follow him.

Orlin – “We should reach Kalvar in about an hour.”

Laurel – “Is it that mountain over there?”

Orlin – “Yes, within it. Kalvar was built inside a large cavernous space.”

Thistle – “A cavern? Sounds dangerous.”

Orlin – “Oh it is, or rather it used to be. Living in Kalvar was always a challenge, but little by little we built safeguards. The hazard of falling rocks or stalactites was ever present in the past. In these times however, people can focus on the important matters, living their life as best they can.”

Thistle – “It must be an incredible sight.”

Orlin – “You sound like a fan of architecture, seems odd for a wisp.”

Thistle – “We have no need for such things, so we admire what others can build with the physical world. Human architecture is interesting, but it’s not the only one I admire. Dragons, for example, used to build incredible cities before the sealing.”

Orlin – “Ah, I see. It is said that Kalvar’s foundation was originally a dragon settlement. They have not returned sadly, we would surely welcome them.”

Laurel – “I think it should be obvious that the Sentients do not want to deal with humans as much. After all, we are the cause of the sealing.”

The road had guards stationed at certain intervals. They would move to different positions every few hours to keep them active and in rotation. The recent attack by Gerthran had the Grentis military on high alert. Orlin explained that it would be unlikely for Gerthran to return, as he had already acquired what he wanted, but the extra guards made the people feel safe.

Mists rolled over the paths, sometimes obscuring them and forcing everyone to slow their pace. Laurel held a light flare just above her hand. Thistle often ventured all around. The surroundings were interesting to her. Much of the vegetation was kept clear of the road to avoid any difficulties for travelers and merchants.

As they got closer to the city, more and more merchants passed the group by. When they arrived Thistle noted the large and imposing entry gate. Giant pillars held parts of the roof of the cavern. Openings in other parts filtered daylight into the cavern. This light was then redirected using mirrors that pointed to key areas of the city. One such area was the central marketplace. Another place of importance was the city center, home of the Grentis council. The rest of the city was lit by unique mushrooms that gave off an intense light. Laurel marveled at the sights, admiring every little detail she could. Meanwhile Thistle flew ahead of the group looking for statues, carvings and other such things. A large aqueduct served the city with the pristine waters that fed into the cavern.

Orlin arrived with Laurel and Thistle to his council room. In this room was a stone table with stacks of papers, decrees, council discussions and other documents awaiting his review.

Orlin – “Apologies for the mess, but the recent attack left us with much to consider. Though the council won’t meet again until later today I assure you I have their approval for what I am about to ask of you.”

Thistle – “That’s not very reassuring.”

Orlin – “We were actually discussing what to do with the artifacts after receiving word from the Entralian Council. Sadly we were too late. At the very least we knew you were gathering artifacts to oppose Gerthran, so before the council dismissed earlier we decided to give you permission to search the depths for a particular artifact.”

Laurel – “So there are still some left here?”

Orlin – “Yes, at least one more that we are aware of. There is another, but that one should reveal itself once you’ve acquired the one here. We don’t know exactly what it is, but we know it is hidden in a maze beneath Kalvar.”

Thistle – “All these artifacts have been preceded by a test. The trial of dragons in Brensur, the glacier temple in Ixis, the hidden island in Rallion and now this. Are these all connected?”

Laurel – “According to the mural at Rallion, the artifacts that have bound themselves to me are the joint artifacts created to battle Cythia. Along with what Lumos discovered I may end up being the best bet to confront Gerthran and Cythia.”

Orlin – “Lumos is wise. Your recent confrontation also reveals that you will require all the artifacts.”

Laurel – “Right, where do I have to go then?”

Thistle – “You’re not going alone again, I’m coming with you!”

Orlin – “I see no problem with that. You can help to guide Laurel.”

    Thistle – “Yes!”

Orlin – “Behind this structure is a small entry to a very dark cave. Make sure you can light your way. You might find torches or braziers to ignite. You will have to navigate the maze to reach the artifact holding chamber. Be mindful that your connection to earth magic will be tested, so I suggest you begin practicing now.”

    Laurel – “Got it.”

Orlin – “Be careful, right now you are our best bet against Gerthran.”

Laurel – “I’ll try my best.”

Thistle – “And so will I!”

Laurel and Thistle searched the back of the structure and found a dimly lit entryway. They had to navigate a multitude of corridors that went far into the depths of the cavern. They finally arrived at the maze itself. The large structure had various entrances and its walls reached the ceiling, making it impossible to fly over. Blazing hot magma lit the outside of the room and surrounded the entirety of the maze, with the exception of a small entry bridge. Laurel picked one of the entrances and moved in. “I could get lost in here forever”, she thought. Trying to make marks on the walls proved futile, they were enchanted and the surface shifted until the mark was gone. They did have their own markings though, this was something Laurel would need to decipher as it could provide a clue on how to proceed. Hours went by and the maze seemed endless. Finally Laurel found a room with a carved stone tablet. This tablet showed how to move certain walls and open doorways that were specifically marked. Laurel would need to meditate in order to strengthen the magical tether to earth mana.

One after another, a wall here, a doorway there and the maze began to open up. Each new path was a way forward. Some specially marked stones only opened a small window, but behind those windows a hidden path was cleared further in. The maze had now shifted dramatically from what it initially was. To both Laurel and Thistle it was confusing, but the hidden path that was being slowly opened, revealed itself when the last of the special stones was moved. This final path led directly to a room with a pedestal. Just above said pedestal was a gem that resembled the Emerald of Winds. This room was brightly illuminated by large crystal formations. When Laurel approached she noticed the gem was mostly white. Powerful earth magic radiated from the gem which revealed itself as the Quartz of Lands. As with previous artifacts the Quartz bound itself to Laurel and hovered around her. She was flooded with earth magic and could sense the lands.

A final challenge emerged. The maze crumbled into pieces that sank into the lava. Thistle expressed her concern to Laurel, but she in turn was confident she had all the necessary tools to cross the fiery magma. On the ceiling was a large rectangular carving. A lead of sorts to help visualize what needed to be done. Using a spell that could cut the stone through that same carving, the cut created a large stone block that fell onto the magma and created a pathway. The size allowed it to float for some time before it melted away, giving Laurel the opening she needed to cross.

Laurel returned to Orlin showing him the Quartz of Lands she had gained.

Orlin – “Excellent work Laurel. Now that you have that I have some good news.”

    Laurel – “Oh?”

Thistle – “Is it about that other artifact?”

Orlin – “Yes indeed. Not long after you left I received a report that the sands shifted in an area of Scillion. I believe you should find the next item there.”

Laurel – “I will head for Scillion, but can I at least get some rest?”

Orlin – “Goodness me, you must be exhausted! Apologies, but Gerthran’s attack has us on edge. It feels like we must rush to gain the upper hand. No amount of acquired power will matter if you are too tired to use it though. So yes, please, take what time you need.”

Thistle – “Why didn’t you say something earlier?”

Laurel – “I feel the same way as Orlin. Gaining power to oppose Gerthran is a big priority.”

Orlin – “You do need rest, regardless. Go to the Inn at the edge of Kalvar. Rest there and once you’re ready, I will accompany you to Scillion.”

Thistle – “Sounds like a plan, let’s go Laurel.”

Orlin escorted Laurel to the Inn he mentioned and then returned to continue some of his duties with the council. Later at night, on that same day, Laurel woke up a bit disoriented. The area where the Inn was located was dimly lit all of the time. It was very quiet outside. Very few people could be seen walking around the streets. Laurel took her time to enjoy the peace. Her thoughts stirred, she knew she would have to face Gerthran again. Next time, she promised herself she would be ready.

Thistle approached from high above. She was studying the construction of the support pillars. Meanwhile a guard let Laurel know that Orlin would arrive soon. Laurel was surprised, but the guard mentioned the council had been in session for most of the night. As soon as Orlin reached Laurel they began their trip back to the world portal.

Now returned to the ruins of Scillion, Laurel, Thistle and Orlin discussed their next goal.

Laurel – “We’re here, what now?”

Orlin – “Just north of here is a place with a very large plaza. The report indicated thatthe sands used to cover a large carved stone. Our scholars couldn’t figure out what the carvings meant, but now that you have the Quartz of Lands it should be easy for you to discover what to do there.”

Thistle – “Was there anything else?”

Orlin – “The carvings seemed complex. With your knowledge and the artifacts I’m sure you will learn something the scholars couldn’t.”

Thistle lit nearby torches, as it was still nighttime in Entralia. While she did this, Laurel studied the carvings.

Laurel – “There isn’t much to go on, but this here looks like it refers to the Boots of Scillion.”

Thistle – “But you have those already.”

Laurel – “And they might be the key to the artifact here. There’s an energy emanating from around this area.”

Laurel moved a nearby stone using her magic to what looked like a spot specifically made for that stone. The floor reacted and sank a little. It seemed she had the right idea. Another stone that could fit a different carved opening was also nearby. Once again the floor sank a bit more, but it was still not enough. The carved floor was a kind of pressure plate. If it could be pressed down at a very specific weight it would activate a mechanism. Laurel thought how the two stones she placed were specifically built to provide some weight, but not all that was required. She then remembered how the Boots of Scillion were depicted. In the carving on the floor, the boots seemed much larger than what she was currently wearing. Thistle reminded her that she still had the Emerald of Winds equipped to the boots. An idea flashed in her mind and using her magic she removed the emerald and replaced it with the Quartz of Lands. Immediately upon changing the boots became heavier and heavier. The pressure plate sank. The earth magic in the quartz could be altered changing how much the boots weighed. Finally a loud clunk signaled the activation of the mechanism. A nearby fountain, which was completely dry, began to rise. A doorway started to emerge. There was a small chamber protected by magical enchantments which dissipated once it had completely surfaced. Inside were a pair of bracers.

    Laurel – “This is it.”

Orlin – “Excellent! Go on, take them.”

Laurel grabbed the bracers from the pedestal where they were held. As soon as she placed them on her arms a flood of ancient knowledge gave her insight into the artifacts. The Bracers of Utoas are the second joint artifact of Grentis and Rallion. They were hidden here in Scillion to signal each of those worlds that their collaboration had allowed them to create powerful tools.

Orlin – “Great work! I should report back to the council. Laurel, we place our hope in your hands. Return to Balancor, search for whatever you might need next and tell the Entralian council that they can count on us if they need reinforcements.”

Laurel – “I will. Thank you Orlin, you’ve been of great help.”

Orlin – “Farewell, Laurel and you too Thistle!”

    Thistle – “Take care!”

Orlin left in a hurry to return to the council at Grentis. It will bring them much needed hope after the defeat they suffered. Laurel’s next destination was Balancor. The desert would once again challenge them, but this time she had both the power of wind and earth at her disposal. The sands would now bow down to her newfound strength. Thistle and Laurel reached the surrounding forest in a matter of minutes. It will take them some more time to reach the capital and inform the council of what has transpired.

  • 7 Worlds: Explorations – Ep12

    Episode 12: Trial of Sands

Traversal through the forest surrounding the desert of Scillion was fairly comfortable. A road had been built through the forest for merchants and travelers. As they reached the area where the sands met the trees Lumos stopped.

Lumos – “This is as far as I go. My dear friends, carry on. I will be meeting with the council to plan ahead for whatever Gerthran might try next.”

Laurel – “Be careful on the way back to Balancor. So far Gerthran has only sent his goons to harass people and steal some artifacts.”

Lumos – “Yes, I am afraid of what he will do next as he continues to gain power through those artifacts.”

Thistle – “Laurel will surely be able to match and exceed whatever he might come up with.”

Laurel – “I’m a little afraid of having to face him.”

Lumos – “You will be fine. Between the artifact’s ancient knowledge and your own natural skill he will not stand a chance. Now, it’s best you get going.”

Going their separate ways was a bit of a gamble. No one really knew the whereabouts of Gerthran, nor what his capabilities were. Regardless, Laurel and Thistle began to make their way through the desert. The sands made it difficult to traverse. The heat and dry air were also a cause for concern. Laurel brought small vials of water to use sporadically if needed. She feared she would have to use them all too early into the journey. Thankfully they picked a time when travel might be easier, just as the sun began to set on the horizon. The problem would now be that it would get incredibly cold, so Laurel needed to use that time wisely.

Night had fallen. Cold winds were sweeping in from the north. Laurel and Thistle continued their way towards the ruins of Scillion where the Grentis world portal is located. The great ancient city was once a great hub of trade and culture. Countless wars in the past eroded and eventually killed the city itself. Its people retreated to Grentis and, with the help of fire masters, ravaged the region around Scillion. This served to protect Grentis, few were truly prepared to travel through such a harsh environment. With no more time to waste Laurel decided it would be best to use anything in her power to hasten her pace. The Boots of Scillion equipped with the Emerald of Winds would once again be the solution she needed. Her running speed was incredible. At that movement rate she only needed to skim the sands lightly to move forward. The winds also helped carry her. In a few minutes she reached the ruins, though at the cost of some of her mana.

Laurel – “We did it! Oof.”

Thistle – “Are you sure you should’ve done that?”

Laurel – “It was the best way, I’m down to my last vial.”

Thistle – “Hey look, there’s the portal.

A short walk from the ruined entryway was the world portal to Grentis. As they approached it started activating. To their surprise, no one was there to tend to it. It was still very dark. Thistle used fire magic to light some torches that were placed on broken pillars. The light revealed a terrible scene. The spell master as well as the guards were dead.

Laurel – “This… what in the worlds happened here?”

Thistle – “Uh oh, this doesn’t look good. The agents of chaos have never been anything more than an annoyance, but this carnage…”

Laurel – “Hush Thistle, let’s hide over there.”

The portal became fully powered. An energy beam burst through and flew off into the sky. On the other side, the image of a small army could be seen. Slowly they began to cross into Entralia. The soldiers lined up waiting for someone else. Finally a man emerged and the portal closed behind him. He ordered his troops to move ahead while he spoke to his two closest people. Laurel recognized the robes, the two were the priests of chaos, Mikayla and Garan. Gerthran wore some of the artifacts that had been previously stolen along with a large amulet that hung from his neck.

Gerthran – “With the artifact we have acquired from Grentis we are almost done with our quest. Mikayla, I want you to begin the retrieval of the artifact in Zanathas.”

Mikayla – “What about the one still on Rallion?”

Gerthran – “Garan will take care of that.”

    Garan – “Yes my lord.”

Mikayla – “I apologize again for my blunder, I should have known it was a fake.”

Gerthran – “You have not realized your full chaotic potential my dear. Cythia will not be as forgiving, keep that in mind. Right now I need…”

Gerthran stopped and looked directly at where Laurel was hiding.

Gerthran – “Come child, there is no need to fear me.”

Laurel did not respond. Gerthran used his magic to pull Laurel’s body from her hiding spot.

    Mikayla – “You!”

Garan – “We meet again, what a coincidence.”

Laurel – “What did you do here? Was this your doing?”

Gerthran – “It was indeed, they were in my way. Tell me your name.”

Laurel – “I am Laurel, and I can’t let you get away with this.”

Thistle – “Yeah, you’re a monster for killing these people!”

Gerthran – “Ah, a wisp as well, I knew I sensed someone else.”

Mikayla – “I should kill you where you stand! Your interference cost me and Lord Gerthran our precious time!”

Gerthran – “Be calm for now Mikayla, little Laurel is already too late to stop me.”

Laurel – “What are you planning?”

Gerthran – “You should know by now, you helped to pave the way. Many of the artifacts you gathered released part of the energy of our mistress Cythia. For our world to fulfill its destiny, she must be freed.”

Laurel – “Lumos told me how she almost destroyed Entralia in the past. She cannot be unleashed!”

Garan – “There is no chaos within you, thus, you would not understand. This chaos is our true nature.”

Gerthran – “It seems you need a lesson in what our true nature can provide. Leave me.”

    Mikayla – “But my lord…”

    Gerthran – “Leave!”

Both Mikayla and Garan left to join the troops that had already begun their march through the desert. Gerthran and Laurel were going to face off. The once mysterious leader of the agents of chaos was here and ready to show his power.

Gerthran – “One last thing before the lesson begins. My supreme army of chaos will scour this land. We will not fail my mistress. Chaos will rule once again.”

Thistle – “That’s what you think!”

Thistle prepared to launch a fireball against Gerthran, but he anticipated the attack and blew Thistle away with his own magic. Chaotic energies swirled around him. His hands gathered this energy and focused it. Where the balance used each element in the most perfected form, the chaos was erratic. Laurel prepared herself and drew the ringblade.

Gerthran – “That little rusted thing will not help you, nor the artifacts you wear so proudly.”

Laurel launched the ringblade along with light energy spheres that exploded around Gerthran. Meanwhile he swatted away the ringblade with the energy on his fists, the weapon ended up embedding itself deeply into one of the nearby pillars. Laurel launched ice spears and flames, but Gerthran was able to capture them and absorb the energies. Shortly after a powerful burst of wind was shot from Laurel’s hands. Once again Gerthran knew exactly how to counter the spell, redirecting the winds and dispersing them.

Gerthran – “Enough! You are not worthy of those artifacts nor the power you possess. Time for this lesson to end!”

In a desperate attempt to attack Gerthran directly Laurel drew close and let loose a lightning bolt. The bolt hit Gerthran’s body on his left side, just beneath his ribs. This only served to anger him though. He repeated the body control spell he had used earlier and pushed Laurel away, then held her in the air. With Laurel helpless, he unleashed the chaotic energies he held in his hands and directed it all towards her. Laurel was assaulted by the energies. Small embers burned some parts of her arms. Bolts of energy paralyzed her body while small blades of ice cut at her legs. She began to lose consciousness before Gerthran released her.

Gerthran – “I trust that you have learned your lesson. I will let you live, but you better not interfere with my path again.”

Laurel couldn’t respond. The magical tethers to the elements were broken. Her artifacts had dulled, lost their luster and glow. In her mind it felt as if she was a helpless child once again, without the knowledge of spells or the training she had endured to learn balance magic.

Gerthran left Laurel on the floor near the Grentis world portal and began to walk toward the desert. The sun would soon rise, his figure faded in the distance. Thistle, trapped in a vortex of energy, was released from it and quickly flew down to the ruins.

Thistle – “Laurel? Laurel, please wake up! No, please, I can’t lose you too…”

The wisp had not noticed that her own energy had been distorted, she was hurt. Thistle’s own magical energies had been disrupted, but she could still use healing magic. She focused as much energy as she could and began the slow process. At the same time she cast a healing spell on herself that would help to stabilize her energies.

In Laurel’s mind a unique scene unfolded, once again. This time she stood in the middle of a cavern while a figure looked at her.

Mysterious figure – “Well, that could have gone way worse.”

    Laurel – “This feels familiar.”

Mysterious figure – “Know that I’m here to help. Focus on my voice and these five orbs that float just in front of you.”

    Laurel – “What are they?”

Mysterious figure – “They are the tethers that were broken earlier. You need to restore them and the balance some of these provided. If the chaos builds within you it will eventually destroy you.”

Laurel – “Ok, what do I do.”

Mysterious figure – “Think about your experiences so far and how you acquired the tethers in the first place. They will guide you to reestablishing the mana flow.”

The orbs that surrounded laurel began to glow slightly and a thread of energy linked with her body.

Mysterious figure – “Good, now you need to strengthen these bonds so that they are unbreakable. The items you gathered are still with you. Use their power to enhance these threads.”

The threads began to glow with greater brightness. The dark cavern became illuminated. Laurel could see the figure clearly. It was a young woman, but she did not recognize her.

    Laurel – “Who are you?”

Mysterious figure – “Well done, remember to do this with the remaining artifacts. You must gather them all. As for who I am, I will tell you, in due time.”

Thistle was still using what little magic she could, when the world portal began to power up. The wisp refused to move regardless of what may come through. To her surprise a group of soldiers from Grentis emerged and a man, who moved closer to her.

Orlin – “Greetings wisp, I am Orlin, councilman of Grentis. Is your friend alright? I assume she encountered Gerthran?”

Thistle – “Yes, she did. We couldn’t fight him, he was too strong.”

Laurel opened her eyes and without hesitation cast a healing spell on herself while releasing fire mana to help Thistle.

Thistle – “Whoa, when did you learn to do that?”

Laurel – “Frankly, it’s a strange matter, but I feel I have a better link to the artifacts now. Magic and spells flow more easily. Orlin you said was your name?”

Orlin – “Yes, how are you feeling?”

Laurel – “I’ll be fine, Thistle? What about you?”

Thistle – “Thanks to the energy from the Ring of Flames I can stabilize my own wounds.”

Orlin – “To harm a wisp in such a way. Gerthran is a very dangerous individual. He caused quite a stir in Kalvar, our capital. Come, you should join me there.”

Orlin helped Laurel rise to her feet. She was still a bit unstable, but quickly regained her footing.

Laurel – Oh, I almost forgot, my name’s Laurel and this is Thistle.”

Orlin – “Ah, you must be Lumos’ companions, we were told you would come to Grentis. It is unfortunate that you coincided with Gerthran’s attack.”

Laurel – “We need to warn Zanathas and Jenehrtes.”

Orlin – “Indeed, that will be my first priority once we arrive at the council at Kalvar. Guards, four of you stay here while we select a new spell master to guard the portal. The rest of you please escort us back to Kalvar.”

The terrible confrontation with Gerthran only served to heighten Laurel’s fears, but in her defeat she found a way to strengthen her magic. Now Thistle and laurel must venture into the world of earth magic and search for any artifacts that may remain.

  • 7 Worlds: Explorations – Ep11

    Episode 11: Leaping Forward

Lumos, though worried about Laurel and Thistle, spent time discussing his initial discoveries about the artifacts and the warriors of chaos with the council of Rallion. In return for his disclosure of events and his renown as a sage, he was granted access to the Book of Cythia. The book itself was heavily guarded. It was moved around as dictated by an ancient agreement between the worlds. Each of the worlds was required to take the book and keep it for an unspecified amount of time.

While Laurel toiled at the hidden island where the Emerald of Winds was held, Lumos studied the book. In its pages it was revealed that Cythia was not only its own particular dimension, it was also the name of a being. Cythia, the being, was destroyed in ancient times by a desperate alliance between the worlds. During that time Entralia was on the edge of calamity. The chaotic energies controlled by Cythia destroyed all semblance of balance and the magic school was nearly extinguished. If not for the intervention of another being and several rulers of the worlds, Entralia would have been lost. In turn, Cythia’s power was split. She had managed to conjure immortality for herself, so the last recourse was to use the artifacts to seal away bits of her power. The dimension itself gained her name, but before that it was a world of its own, representing the most concentrated form of chaos. It was fitting to seal away a being that had enriched herself with such energies. The book also explained that she served another, a god named Danathos. The latter was vanquished many decades ago. Making the necessary connections was easy. Gerthran must be a follower of Cythia. He declared his followers warriors of chaos and decided to spread that particular influence, but to what end? And how do the artifacts tie in? A realization quickly formed in Lumos’ mind. The energy being released was that of Cythia herself. Gerthran was planning to free her.

Time had gone by in an instant for Lumos. Laurel soon arrived carrying the Emerald of Winds. She explained her ordeals. Lumos lamented her injury from the lightning bolt that scarred her arm, but she brushed it off as nothing she couldn’t handle.

Lumos – “Seeing the gryphons must have been quite the spectacle.”

Thistle – “They’re nothing special, wisps on the other hand.”

Laurel – “Oh come on Thistle, you know they were impressive.”

Thistle – “Alright, alright, they were. Rhova was truly a master of flight.”

Laurel – “Yes, had it not been for him I might’ve perished.”

Lumos – “Well, I am glad he saved you. Now, we must talk with the council to check for any other artifacts.”

Laurel – “There should be at least one more, according to the mural I found at the island.”

Ralvan arrived from a meeting he had with other council members.

Ralvan – “We are aware of your need to acquire the artifacts we possess. There is only one we can spare for you. It is hidden in a chamber beneath the Ancient Archives on Utoas.”

Lumos – “An artifact there? It would have been helpful to acquire it earlier.”

Ralvan – “Perhaps, but we needed to make sure you wouldn’t misuse it. Laurel, acquiring the Emerald of Winds is no easy feat, but also gaining the friendship of the gryphons? That is even more impressive. We entrust you with the artifact in Utoas. There is another one we have here in the council chamber that will be guarded at all costs.”

Laurel – “Those warriors of chaos will get what’s coming to them. In the meantime we can tilt the balance in our favor.”

Thistle – “Well said Laurel, you’re becoming quite the warrior.”

Lumos – “That reminds me, we must continue combat training with the ringblade.”

Laurel – “All in due time.”

While Laurel and Lumos discussed other things, a guard entered the room and spoke to Ralvan.

Ralvan – “You must hurry to Utoas. It is under attack!”

Laurel – “What? How? Isn’t the portal protected?”

Ralvan – “The guard reports that the city’s flight mechanism was disabled. It is currently descending. Someone from that group you mentioned must have done this.”

Lumos – “Goodness, then hurry we will! Thistle, hurry back and help the people there.”

Thistle – “Alright, some action! Consider those agents of chaos toast!”

Lumos – “Laurel, go ahead of me and find the artifact. Gerthran’s forces cannot reach it first.”

    Laurel – “Got it.”

Lumos was aware that his age would not enable him to engage in combat for long, but he could strategize a plan to reinforce Laurel and Thistle later on. Along with Ralvan they planned to get a guard contingency ready in case the world portal was breached. The agents of chaos would no doubt search for the artifact in the Rallion council chambers.

With the power of the Emerald of Winds Laurel was quick to fly off to Rihaltan. Thistle had already gone through the world portal, which was still active. Laurel told the guards to close the portal behind her to stall the invaders temporarily. Once on the other side people were frantically running around looking to hide from the bombardment of fire spells being shot from the ground. In the city itself warriors had spread around attacking both the guards and people. Thistle was casting walls of fire to split up the warriors and protect the citizens. Meanwhile Laurel rushed to the Ancient Archives. Upon her arrival she encountered Ravaan fighting some of the warriors. With her help they defeated the warriors. She explained to Ravaan that the council had ordered her to retrieve the artifact hidden in the archives.

While Laurel ran through the archives along with Ravaan, Thistle was moving around the city searching for people to help out. Her magic was strong. A burst of fire to knock a few of the warriors against each other. Fiery embers to heat metals, making heavy armor unbearable. The tide of the battle was turning. In the heat of battle Thistle came across the leader of the assault, a priestess they had encountered before.

Mikayla – “You! I’ve seen you before, you’re with that girl.”

Thistle – “And what if I am?”

Mikayla – “Then that just confirms my suspicions that there is an artifact to be had here. Warriors, go to the world portal and bring back whatever you find in Rallion. I will take care of this rowdy little wisp.”

Thistle – “Rowdy? You don’t know the half of it. Bring it on then!”

Mikayla was swift to cast spears of ice against Thistle. The wisp nimbly dodged the attack and responded with her own fiery spell. Their battle was a test of spell knowledge and endurance. Icy stalagmites shot up from the floor in a row towards Thistle, she in turn fired blazing rings cutting the stalagmites. The fight continued for a time, neither gaining any ground against the other. In the background guards could be heard yelling at some of the warriors who had made off with an artifact. Mikayla, considering her mission a success, sounded the retreat.

Thistle – “Running again eh? Coward!”

Mikayla – “Little wisp, you have much to learn. You were clearly hindering us from our main goal so I merely held you here.”

    Thistle – “What?!”

Mikayla – “Pah! Tell your friend we have a score to settle. Agents of chaos, retreat!”

A thick mist quickly enveloped the city, which was still descending. In a short moment the warriors plaguing Utoas were no longer there. Thistle was worried they might have hurt Laurel so she hurried to the Ancient Archives. When she arrived Laurel was at the entrance with Ravaan.

Laurel – “Thistle! Are you alright?”

Thistle – “I was about to ask you the same, didn’t the warriors come through here?”

Laurel – “No, but some of them passed into Rallion. When they returned they had something with them.”

Ravaan – “It was most likely the other hidden artifact. That doesn’t matter anymore, we need to restore the lifting mechanism or the city will crumble when it finishes its descent.”

Laurel – “Right! You mentioned there’s a device in the northern part of the city?”

Ravaan – “Yes, and one in the eastern part near here. Both need to be reactivated using wind magic.”

Laurel – “You take care of this one, I’ll run to the northern device.”

Ravaan – “Hurry, we don’t have much time.”

Thistle noticed Laurel was wearing a set of unique boots. The Emerald of Winds, which was orbiting Laurel, moved onto the boots and changed their appearance. For Laurel they became much lighter and she could feel the wind moving in her favor. Now she could run at great speed to reach her target. When she reached the device a thunderbolt spell caused it to activate once again. Everyone felt as the city’s descent stopped. Slowly the city ascended to its previous position. Laurel returned to the archives.

Thistle – “Let me guess, those are bound to you now.”

Laurel – “Yep. They are called the Boots of Scillion.”

Thistle – “Your speed was unbelievable! Almost like a lightning bolt yourself.”

Laurel – “Maybe not as fast as a bolt, but pretty fast nonetheless.”

Ravaan – “Great work Laurel! The city is climbing back into the clouds.”

Thistle – “I wonder how the old man is doing.”

Laurel – “Goodness! Let’s go check on Lumos!”

When Laurel arrived at the world portal it was already active. Some of the guards from the other side passed through to assess the situation on Utoas. Behind the guards was Lumos.

    Laurel – “Are you alright?”

Lumos – “Yes, a bruise here and there, but nothing that couldn’t be healed.”

Thistle – “The same lady priestess from Ixis was the one that attacked. They said they acquired the artifact.”

    Lumos – “Did they now?”

Laurel – “You sound too happy about it, what happened?”

Lumos – “We used a decoy. It took us some time to prepare, but with you two battling them here we knew our plan would work. We placed the decoy on some altar in Rihaltan. The warriors didn’t have much knowledge of what they were looking for, so they took the first thing that they saw.”

Thistle – “Clever and a bit devious too. I’m glad that priest lady didn’t get what she wanted.”

Laurel – “And I got what we were looking for. The Boots of Scillion.”

Lumos – “Scillion you say? Then this was created by the alliance of Rallion and Grentis.”

Laurel – “The world of earth magic is next right?”

Lumos – “Correct. The path to that world portal is rather dangerous. You must tread with care. The region called Scillion is a vast desert and at its center is the ruins of a city with the same name. Inside that city is the world portal to Grentis.”

Thistle – “Let’s get going then!”

Lumos – “Not so fast Thistle. I must tell you something Laurel. I cannot continue along your path.

    Laurel – “Why? What’s wrong?”

Lumos – “To be completely honest, I am exhausted, but I wish to continue to help.”

Thistle – “What will you do?”

Lumos – “I will accompany you to the edge of the desert, from there you should be good to go.”

    Laurel – “And after that?”

Lumos – “After that I will return to the Entralian Council. I must report my findings and tell them of the severity of this situation. Cythia must not be restored.”

Laurel – “I’ll miss you at Grentis. You still owe me a few more battling lessons too.”

Lumos – “Don’t worry, we still have some time for me to teach you, at least until we reach the desert.”

Leaving Laurel and Thistle to travel on their own was difficult for Lumos, but it was necessary. Meeting with the Entralian Council was imperative. They needed to forge a plan to stop Gerthran.

A good night’s rest in Utoas and the group would be ready to set off once again. At night the windy roads within the city calmed. Only the footsteps of the guards occasionally broke the silence. In a few days Laurel and Thistle would have to brave the desert region of Scillion.

    Episode 10: Winds of Rallion

The vast sky opened up to the group. A few other people also ventured into the world. For many, like Laurel and Thistle, this was their first time visiting Rallion. The village of Rihaltan greeted them. A small floating island that was expanded to allow easy access for merchants and travelers to the commerce that Rallion provides. However, the largest market was not here, it was in Alto, the capital of this world.

Lumos – “Rallion has powerful and highly enchanted wind currents that can take you to different regions and cities.”

    Laurel – “What are those?!”

    Thistle – “They look fun!”

Lumos – “Ha, those are airships, they too travel the wind currents but at a more leisurely pace. Their destinations are often the cities where people go to relax.”

Thistle – “Can we go to one of those places?”

Laurel – “Thistle, we have a job to do remember?”

Thistle – “How about when we finish this? We come back to Rallion and spend time relaxing.”

Lumos – “I promise Thistle, we’ll come back and take the airship. For now, summon your wings Laurel and stay close to me. The trip to Alto should be short, but the winds sometimes shift.”

    Laurel – “Got it.”

Rihaltan has a number of ledges that overlook various wind currents. There are also tunnels with floor grates that let the air pass through and allow people to use them to launch into a wind current. Most of these ledges are floating paths where the Airships dock. These airships also land on a large plaza for easier access. Laurel and Lumos stood at the edge, summoned their wings and prepared to leap. As soon as their wings caught on the currents they could easily glide to Alto. Along with them were a group of people headed for the big city. During the trip some more people joined or split off into different currents that took them to different locations. In a sudden twist a powerful current blew off Laurel and Thistle into another. Lumos, being ahead of the two, didn’t notice.

Laurel tumbled through the currents aimlessly. Thistle tried to use some of her magic to create heat that, in turn, would cause a lifting draft to help right Laurel’s course. After a third attempt one of the drafts created by Thistle was able to help her wayward friend. Laurel tried to hover in place but her tether to wind magic was weak and her wings were starting to dissipate.

Thistle – “What do we do? Lumos is too far away and there aren’t any good currents here. Should I use more of my magic?”

Laurel – “I-I need to focus. If I can’t strengthen my link to wind magic, I’ll fall.”

Thistle – “Focus Laurel! You can do this!”

Her wings continued to slowly fade. The spell was breaking away. As this happened Laurel was beginning a freefall towards the world core. The core is a massive amalgam of wind, thunder and clouds. It is said that there are currents that protect travelers from falling into it, but no one had ever dared to test this. Suddenly as Laurel’s wings disappeared the shadow of a creature flew rapidly by and caught her. Thistle chased after the creature. Not far from where they had been was a small floating island with a tall mountain. There the creature landed and presented itself. He called himself Rhova, short for Rhovastikeer. Rhova hails from the gryphon tribe of Sentients that live in Rallion.

Rhovastikeer – “You are lucky I was patrolling the area. None are faster than me!”

Thistle – “I could’ve caught up with you, for sure!”

Rhovastikeer – “Of course little wisp. Now then, welcome to our home, Allastivan. This island has housed many a generation of gryphons.”

Laurel – “Thank you for saving me. I wasn’t aware that gryphons lived here.”

Rhovastikeer – “We guard the world core. It is a satisfying job, most of the time. The people higher above are always grateful for our interventions, even if they aren’t always obvious. We often try to manipulate the currents to save them before flying in ourselves. Your wing loss was a surprise to me, have you not mastered your tether to wind magic?”

Laurel – “I lost focus. Seeing the world core shook me.”

Rhovastikeer – “Ah, understandable, but it feels like there is something more. You carry items of great power, their energy overflows outward.”

    Another gryphon arrives.

Rhovastikeer – “This is Rhovirikan, my sister. She can lead you back to the higher islands.”

Rhovirikan – “You may call me Viri. I apologize brother, but I cannot take them higher. There is a barrier of winds that has developed in a layer above. We cannot go through. It flings us in every other direction.”

Rhovastikeer – “Strange, it is suspicious that it coincides with their arrival.”

Thistle – “We have nothing to do with that. Laurel can’t even focus on wind magic, let alone create a large wind barrier.”

Laurel – “Ouch, but she’s right. I don’t have the mastery to cause something like that.”

Rhovirikan – “Perhaps it has to do with the hidden island?”

Thistle – “Yo, spill the beans on that, what hidden island?”

Rhovastikeer – “There is an island near the core that is devoid of wind currents. It is said to house some kind of treasure, but no one, not even us, has ever dared to go near it.”

Laurel – “Treasure you say? It could be an artifact, which means we must investigate.”

Rhovastikeer – “Then perhaps you’re the ones the wind has been whispering about.”

Rhovirikan – “How can you be sure?”

Rhovastikeer – “She, in particular, has been helped by other sentients.”

Laurel – “Yes, in Brensur and Ixis. Zethia of the dragon tribe helped me obtain the Ring of Flames and Umari of the whale tribe helped me obtain the Ring of Frost and the Circlet of Cold Flames.”

Rhovirikan – “It is dangerous for a single person to hold so many artifacts, but my brother trusts you.”

Rhovastikeer – “Viri, if she wanted to cause us harm she would have done so already.”

Laurel – “I seek the artifacts because someone else is also gathering them and in more aggressive ways. His name is Gerthran and he apparently leads an army of chaos.”

Rhovirikan – “Army of chaos eh? I believe I have heard of something similar, but do not remember where.”

Rhovastikeer – “It is possible it was part of our ancient knowledge, but some of it was lost in the great sealing. Regardless, if you are in need of the treasure then I shall take you to the island. One thing will be reaching it, another is how to leave. I cannot pick you back up as there are no winds to carry me nor my strength great enough to lift us out.”

Laurel – “I’ll find my own way.”

Thistle – “What about me? I can help.”

Rhovirikan – “No, the wisp must stay here. There is no telling what that place could do to you.”

Laurel – “I’ll be fine Thistle. The artifacts have guided me well so far.”

Rhovastikeer – “Hop on then, I shall take you there but you will have to land with your own wings.”

    Laurel – “I’ll be ready.”

Laurel and Rhova were quick to lift off and fly to the mysterious hidden island. Large clouds covered a small landmass near the world core. Thunder and lightning hurled across the air. Rhova was hesitant to move closer. An extended stone path was the most accessible part so Laurel decided to land there. She jumped off Rhova while he wished her luck. Once again able to summon her own wings, Laurel landed safely, though with difficulty as there were no winds within the space of the island.

Rhova flew off into the sky above, becoming a faint speck. The gryphon’s island, Allastivan, could still be seen in the distance. Meanwhile, Laurel continued forward into the dense fog. Once inside the fog Laurel noticed a mechanism that used windmills, but without a source of wind they did nothing. Although her tether to wind mana was still a bit unstable, Laurel was able to cast a wind spell that took the form of a burst of air. It was enough to start the windmills moving again. In turn a larger windmill began to move and cleared the fog from most of the area she was in. With a large portion of the fog cleared the island revealed itself to be a large structure, very much like the temple in Ixis. Laurel saw that it was slowly sinking further into the core. “I have to hurry”, she thought.

The next area had moving sky stone bricks. They had been enchanted to only hold their position for a short time and then move away. These bricks formed a bridge over a large gap that led into the abyss. Markings on a wall displayed how the winds could carry a person as they ran. Laurel used this to teach herself a spell that could do exactly that. Without much room for testing it was going to be do or die. So she ran, just as the bricks began to form the bridge. The bricks were moving away behind her, almost as fast as she was running. She could not stop at all. Laurel reached the other side with a jump and a little help from conjured wings for an extra boost. The wings dissipated when she landed.

Moving deeper into the structure, she found more and more windmill mechanisms to open doorways and passages. The final challenge presented a large glass orb in front of her. Behind the orb was a sky metal cage housing a grayed out gemstone. A tablet beneath the orb read, “The magic of Rallion is the magic of the skies. Winds, gusts and a tempest of thunder will open the way”. Small windmills on the floor opened up as she moved closer to the orb. This endeavor would require all the wind magic she could muster. Laurel created small tornadoes above the windmills making them spin at great speed. The mechanism activated and opened the walls of the chamber. Just outside of it thunder and lightning swirled around. In order to charge the orb a single one of those bolts would have to be redirected. Laurel did not have the mana necessary to cast a thunderbolt spell. She sat down in front of the orb. The crackling and rumble was unsettling. It was difficult to concentrate. Manipulating such powerful energies, especially when so close to the world core, was very dangerous. In an instant a single lightning bolt flashed before Laurel. The energy pushed her away with great force, slamming her body onto the ground near the entrance. She was almost knocked unconscious. Slowly, she stood up and saw that she was successful, but not without cost. Energy from the bolt made a mark on her arm that resembled the very lightning she sought to control. With the orb powered, the cage over the gemstone lifted. Another lightning bolt, this time from the very top of the chamber blasted in and entered the gem. Its gray color vanished and now it glowed a bright green. Laurel picked the gem and the ancient knowledge poured in. This new artifact is known as the Emerald of Winds. Brightly shining, the gemstone orbited Laurel as if it had a will of its own. As with the other artifacts, her tether to wind magic was strengthened tenfold.

This final chamber activated many other mechanisms within the structure. The world core started to get farther and farther away. Within the walls a low humming could be heard. This building had been built in ancient times and was meant to hold the Emerald of Winds. Everything should have been powered by the gemstone, but for some reason it was rendered inert. This was the reason why the winds around the island had died out. Laurel also learned that the structure controlled where the island was. Once all the remaining fog cleared other broken ruins were revealed. A large mural, half faded, showed a great battle between a powerful being and a group of people who used the gem, along with other powers, to seal away said being. Some of the powers in the mural were clearly what Laurel had already acquired. She could make out the Ring of Flames as well as the Circlet of Cold Flames. All of the artifacts were worn by people from the different worlds. One of these was a set of boots which clearly used earth magic. Laurel suspected this to be the artifact of Grentis. She also saw a set of gauntlets worn by a warrior of Rallion. Perhaps there was another artifact to gain in Rallion.

With her strengthened link to wind magic Laurel could now easily conjure her wings and manipulate the gusts to carry her wherever she wanted. Her flight to Allastivan was swift. It was a surprise to Rhova, Viri and even Thistle when she arrived.

Thistle – “Ok, that was impressive.”

Laurel – “I found a way to get back.”

Rhovastikeer – “Indeed you did. The very currents bow to you.”

Rhovirikan – “With such power you could probably easily reach your previous destination.”

Rhovastikeer – “I want to accompany you Laurel, at least until you reach Alto. I have not been there for some time.”

Laurel – “You saved my life Rhova, I don’t mind having you along for the trip.”

Thistle – “Is that gem the artifact?”

Laurel – “Yes, it has also become bound to me.”

Rhovastikeer – “You possess something special within. Whatever it is will continue guiding you forward.”

Thistle – “Lumos must be worried sick. We should hurry to Alto.”

Laurel – “Goodness! I forgot about Lumos. Yes, let’s head over there now.”

With the winds on their side, Laurel, Rhova and Thistle made it to Alto safely. People who witnessed their landing were shocked to see Rhova. Gryphons were widely known to inhabit the lower islands, but very rarely visited human settlements. The city guard was alerted and moved to surround them. Rhova remained alert, but calm. Between the guards a man moved closer and presented himself.

Ralvan – “Greetings great gryphon, I am Ralvan, member of the Rallion council. To what do we owe this visit?”

Rhovastikeer – “Greetings, I am Rhovastikeer. I accompany this young lady here and her companion.”

Laurel – “Hello! I’m Laurel and this is Thistle.”

    Thistle – “Hi!”

Ralvan – “Well, I did not expect to find you here. We sent out a multitude of patrols to search for you. Lumos is at the council chambers, he will be glad to see you are safe.”

Laurel – “Great. Rhova, thank you for all your help.”

Rhovastikeer – “It was an honor. You inspire kindness Laurel, do not let anyone take that away from you. Now, I must depart.”

    Laurel – “Take care Rhova!”

Thistle – “Let’s go Laurel, the old man must be throwing a fit.”

Rhovastikeer flew off, once again drawing the attention of the people. By now the guards had retreated to their posts. Meanwhile Laurel and Thistle were accompanied by Ralvan to the Rallion Council chambers.

  • 7 Worlds: Explorations – Ep9

    Episode 9: Ancient Ascent

Everything seemed so small from so high up. The flying city of Utoas, mainly accessible through a portal on the ground, overlooked much of the main continent. Cities like Balancor were clearly visible as well as many villages and other regions. Laurel, Lumos and Thistle had made it here after having visited Balancor to report to Lord Lindrel. Laurel’s father warned them that things were getting worse with increasing attacks from the agents of chaos. Villages had been able to defend themselves, but the constant threat was causing a wave of fear to wash over the people.

A whole week had passed since the events at Ixis. Today the group admired the way Utoas remained afloat in the sky and its intricate architecture.

Laurel – “Is there any reason why the city is here, floating in the sky?”

Lumos – “Well, in ancient times the city was on the ground. It made it difficult to protect it from assaults coming from different directions. In order to preserve the city as well as access to Rallion, a system of devices was developed that raised it.”

Thistle – “Are the devices those orbs we keep seeing all around the city?”

Lumos – “Indeed. If memory serves, they were built during a ceasefire and deployed when enemies of the city discovered a prototype. Of course, those enemies didn’t understand the function, so they believed the device to be hostile.”

Thistle – “Once again I am reminded that ancient times were pretty horrible here in Entralia. I am glad that many of us were not roaming the lands back then.”

Lumos – “Those wars are a part of our history now, sad as it is. We have learned much since then.”

Laurel – “It’s impressive that the devices continue to function to this day.”

Lumos – “They are a kind of artifact themselves, serving the very specific purpose of keeping the city aloft.”

The group continued to discuss the oddities of the city. Much of it was built using special materials only found in Rallion. Some of these materials are known for their magical properties, like sky stone and sky metal. As their name suggests they are forged in the skies of Rallion and used in most of their constructions. Wind magic permeates these making it easier to shape them using spells of that same element.

Utoas was a bustling city. Much like Balancor, trade was booming and travel to Rallion made it easier for commerce to prosper. It was a surprise for Laurel to sometimes see some of the people dive off an edge of the city, only to sprout eagle or raven wings and fly off into the distance. Wind magic had powerful summoning spells that helped navigate the skies with ease. Command of winds and thunder was this element’s specialty. Thunder is a powerful energy source and it is used to both power the levitators surrounding the city as well as other unique devices, like the portal to the ground. Despite its large size there were parts of the city in active development. Thistle noted how sky metal was shaped to form canals or tubes that provided support. Workers would bring sky stones and move them using wind magic.

Eventually their exploration of the city led them to find the ancient archives. Numerous guards patrolled the area and at least four were permanently posted to the entrance. Just before entering, a man approached them and introduced himself as Ravaan.

    Ravaan – “State your business.”

Lumos – “I am Sage Lumos and I am here at the behest of King Hector of Ixis.”

Ravaan – “My goodness, you’ve finally arrived. We received word of your visit a few days ago.”

Lumos – “Ah, apologies, we were held back at Balancor. We need access to the archives.”

Ravaan – “Due to the current security measures established I can only allow one of you to enter.”

Lumos – “Understood, you’re aware of the threat of the agents of chaos?”

Ravaan – “We are. The council of Rallion has increased the number of soldiers at the world portal as well as here in the city.”

Laurel – “You go ahead then, we can meet at the portal once you’re done.”

Thistle – “Don’t take too long!”

Lumos – “I will try. See you later.”

With Lumos busy looking into more information on the chaotic energy, Laurel and Thistle decided to continue roaming the city.

Inside the archives Ravaan accompanied Lumos to help in the search.

Ravaan – “So far those agents of chaos have yet to make a move on Rallion.”

Lumos – “We have encountered them at least three times already. They attacked a village here in Entralia, a vault in Brensur and the castle itself on Ixis.”

Ravaan – “It’s possible their next target could be Rallion, but we have no way of knowing. They are elusive.”

Lumos – “Indeed, they seem to have no real organization, with one exception. Some of their group have mentioned a man named Gerthran. Currently not even the Entralian council knows who this person is. With how events have been going, I would not be surprised if this person showed up soon.”

Ravaan – “In that case I’ll help you search for whatever books you may need.”

Lumos – “Yes, there are two particular areas of study I need to research. One deals with chaotic energies and the other the history of collaboration between the worlds in ancient times.”

Ravaan – “I’m sure we can find something on that easily.”

The hours passed as Lumos and Ravaan searched. A mountain of books had formed of those that had to be set aside. Few had anything written on the ancient events that Lumos needed to learn of. He did find clues pointing to what he eventually found, an old dusty tome with many faded pages. What little remained readable described a crisis that involved chaotic energies, broken spells and an alliance. This was all that he needed. The worlds did work together at some point in ancient times. Although the main threat was still rather obscure, he now had something to go on. A new crisis, similar to that ancient one, was on the rise and they would need all the help they could get. The joint artifacts would most likely be the key to dealing with the problem, but there was something else. Along with the faded words were also faded illustrations that pictured some sort of deity giving something to the people. What that something was could not be determined, that too was now an unknown part of history.

As for the chaotic energies, Lumos found a book on the dimension known as Cythia. This place had been used as a prison before. It was also the site of a great battle. The origins of this dimension point to a being of the same name, but nothing else is said. The book that mentioned all this was mostly distorted or had torn pages. Other bits mentioned that this dimension was prone to chaotic outbursts and would sometimes seem as if it had a will of its own. Lumos recalled that the Entralian council knew that Cythia had its own world portal, but it was destroyed when the dimension became a prison. Any further information that Lumos tried to glean from the book ended without any new knowledge.

Lumos – “There must be more to this. Do you know of Cythia?”

Ravaan – “I have read bits and pieces about it. The most common knowledge is that it is like its own unique world. A separate dimension, small in size but with wild and swirling energies.”

Lumos – “I feel like the distortions on this book were made on purpose.”

Ravaan – “That book was lent to someone not too long ago. It is possible they tampered with it.”

Lumos – “Do you know of any other copies of it? Or maybe other books similar to this one?”

Ravaan – “There is another book relating to Cythia. It is currently in the hands of the Council of Rallion. You will have to confer with them in the city of Alto.”

Lumos – “Good then, we were planning on going there anyway. Thank you for your help Ravaan.”

Ravaan – “You’re welcome. I will send word ahead of you so that your search is easier.”

Lumos – “Excellent! I should go then, Laurel and Thistle must be bored by now.”

Ravaan led Lumos back to the entrance. He also informed one of the guards to go to Rallion and deliver the message of Lumos’ impending visit.

Just as Lumos suspected, Laurel and Thistle were sitting at one of the edges of the city where people sometimes dive off of to fly off. When Thistle saw Lumos approaching she let out a big sigh and said “Finally!”. As she said this Laurel slid off the edge into the abyss. Lumos ran as fast as he could. Despite his age he made it quickly to the edge, only to find Laurel happily flying around on newly summoned eagle wings. Thistle meanwhile couldn’t hold her laughter at what was a rather cruel prank.

Laurel – “Hey! we went ahead and learned the essentials for travel through Rallion.”

Lumos – “My dear, please don’t do that again. My heart sank to the depths of Entralia.”

Thistle – “Sorry Lumos, it was my idea in the first place.”

Laurel – “Goodness, I apologize as well!”

Lumos – “Apologies accepted, but please be more mindful next time.”

    Laurel – “We will.”

Laurel landed beside Lumos and the wings dissipated into energy.

Laurel – “Did you find anything of use?”

Lumos – “I did, but the rest of the information we need is in Rallion. I have a meeting set up with the Council of Rallion.”

Thistle – “Then let’s get flying!”

Lumos, Laurel and Thistle approached the world portal. A nearby spell master made sure they were prepared for the trip and opened the portal shortly after.

  • 7 Worlds: Explorations – Ep8

Episode 8: The Balance of Fire and Frost

Large icicles rained down upon the castle. While this happened Laurel and Thistle hurried to the throne room. Just outside the castle entrance Ixis soldiers and warriors of chaos fought. Laurel rushed into the throne room, meanwhile Thistle helped the guards fight off some of the warriors. When she finally reached the throne room, Lumos was fighting the leader of the warriors, a priestess named Mikayla.

Mikayla – “I know you have more artifacts in your possession! Give them to me!”

Laurel – “They’re not yours to claim, leave!”

The priestess was skilled in using water magic, but even with such skill Laurel’s attack caught her off guard. Mikayla did not expect the amount of power behind a fire magic spell that Laurel had cast. The flames pushed her back. Laurel firmly put herself between Lumos and Mikayla.

Mikayla – “Pah! Wasteful, we will meet again young lady. Retreat!”

By now some of the warriors of chaos had been apprehended. Mikayla knowing the odds were now completely stacked against them decided to fight another day. She took the remaining warriors, but not before unleashing a spell that lifted large pieces of ice and threw them towards the city. Laurel gave chase, but had to relent or the people would suffer. Using the Ring of Frost, Laurel broke the ice into tiny snowflakes.

    Laurel – “Coward!”

Lumos – “Goodness Laurel, you arrived just in time. Sadly the priestess was able to run off with the artifact that was guarded here at the castle.”

Laurel – “I saw the energy flying off from the castle towards the world portal.”

Lumos – “Yes, it appears that artifact was important.”

Laurel – “Oddly though there was no such energy when I picked the Ring of Frost or the Circlet of Cold Flames.”

Lumos – “I see you’re well familiarized with the new artifacts you acquired. Come, let us report to the king. What happened to your guide? Gelis?”

Thistle – “It turned out he was part of those agents of chaos. He tried to trap us but one of the local sentient tribes helped us out.”

Laurel – “It was thanks to a whale named Umari that I was able to reach the temple and glaciers that held the artifacts.”

Lumos – “Quite the revelation, we must be careful as we move on. No telling what these people are capable of.”

Laurel – “Gelis mentioned someone named Gerthran.”

Lumos – “Mikayla, the priestess, also mentioned him. Looks like we will have much to research.”

King Hector arrived with a number of his guards. He was instructing them to begin questioning the warriors that had been captured. Once back at the throne he asked Lumos to see if he found anything in his short time with the artifact he was studying, which ended up stolen by Mikayla.

Lumos – “I tried a variety of spells and enchantments to explore the history of the artifact. Hidden deep with the artifact itself was a force of pure chaos swirling inside. The item seemed to be in a dormant state, that is, until the priestess used some ritual to reawaken it.”

King Hector – “What power did that helmet hold?”

Lumos – “From what I could tell there are more pieces of a full set of armor. That chaotic energy is hidden in many artifacts though, not just the parts of the armor suit.”

Laurel – “I learned from the circlet that there are at least two more unique artifacts that are a collaboration between two worlds each.”

King Hector – “Most interesting. I would ask you to give the circlet and ring to us, but clearly even we are vulnerable here. It is best if you keep them for now. Since you’re moving through the worlds it will be difficult for that cult to keep track.”

Laurel – “Thank you King Hector. I will do my best to protect them. They are also bound to me for some reason, I would not be able to take them off. The only thing I can do is use the rings in conjunction with the circlet. It is a power only unlocked by having all three of these artifacts.”

Lumos – “Fascinating! What wondrous constructs. We must continue to learn more.”

King Hector – “Indeed you should. I suggest visiting the ancient archive on Utoas. From there you could visit Rallion and ask for a meeting with its ruling council. I can send word ahead of your visit. Ixis and Rallion have been allies for years now.”

Laurel – “That would be very helpful.”

Lumos – “Then let us be off. Every moment counts. Once again we are very grateful for your help King Hector.”

King Hector – “I am glad to be able to help. Go and put a stop to the mad ambitions of that cult.”

Laurel, Thistle and Lumos left the throne room. While walking back to the dock they talked about the recent events.

Lumos – “By now we have seen one common denominator in all this.”

Thistle – “Chaos, chaos and more chaos.”

Lumos – “Indeed, naturally there is chaos all around us, but the world balances itself out. The elements are no different. In the same way they oppose each other they also balance themselves. Alliances between opposing worlds was a rarity in ancient times. It’s possible that there is recorded history of such events. If so, then there should be a book about it in the archives.”

Laurel – “Why don’t we visit Balancor and give father an update on our little adventure?”

Thistle – “That would be great!”

Lumos – “Sure, I don’t see why not. It will do you good to see him and I can report my findings directly.”

After traveling with Captain Hanna again the trio made it safely back to the Frigis Isles. There they decided to get a good rest before making their way to Balancor.

  • 7 Worlds: Explorations – Ep7

    Episode 7: Wandering Glaciers

A cold breeze swept through the throne room. Laurel, Lumos, Thistle and Gelis had arrived. Lumos spoke to one of the guards and they allowed them to approach the king.

Lumos – “King Hector the 4th, it is an honor to be here.”

King Hector – “Well met. I believe you had visited Ixis before, but never came to Ixnar for a visit.”

Lumos – “Ah yes, back then I had a different focus.”

King Hector – “I am glad to have you here now great sage. I received communication not long ago from Lord Lindrel of the Entralian Council, I believe he is the father of this lovely young lady?”

Laurel – “Yes sir, I am Laurel and this is Thistle and Gelis.”

King Hector – “Traveling with sentients no less. Your father mentioned you’re looking for artifacts?”

Laurel – “We are. There is a group of people who are also after the same. Their goals possibly far more sinister, yet we haven’t been able to uncover why they are doing this.”

King Hector – “Your father’s report also mentioned this. I can tell you of three unique artifacts hidden on Ixis. Two of them are far out of reach, and the third is sealed in one of the castle vaults.”

Lumos – “Will you part with it?”

King Hector – “I cannot. The artifact is a royal heirloom. It must not leave Ixis. At the very least I can bring it to you so you may study its properties.”

Lumos – “That will suffice, my king. It will allow me to investigate the energies that the other artifacts seemed to be holding back.”

King Hector – “Good, I will ask the guards to double their patrols in case those agents of chaos decide to show up. As for you, Lady Laurel, there are rumors of a wandering tribe of sentients that are said to be protectors of one of the artifacts. Perhaps you can find a way to contact them.”

Laurel – “Alright, I’ll set out and search the coast.”

Lumos – “I will remain here until you return.”

King Hector – “Be careful if you end up venturing out to sea. It can be treacherous.”

Laurel – “I’ll keep it in mind.”

Gelis – “I can help guide you as well.”

Laurel – “Hey Thistle, you could stay here with Lumos if you want.”

Thistle – “Nah, I’d get bored in a second just staring at Lumos. I’ll accompany you.”

Laurel, Gelis and Thistle left the throne room. King Hector summoned the artifact to be brought up to the throne room. With the artifact there Lumos began his observations immediately and took note of his findings. This artifact was a helmet. It looked ordinary, if somewhat dated. Most likely a design from ancient times that has withstood the test of time. He surmised that since the helmet had kept its pristine appearance it must hold some hidden power. As for any sealed energy there was none he could detect.

Sitting at one of the few coasts Laurel pondered her next steps. While she waited Gelis had left to gather some information on his own. Thistle decided to follow Gelis, hiding around corners and behind barrels. Gelis met with a number of people, and though Thistle couldn’t make out what they spoke of it seemed that they had agreed to meet again. She flew as fast as she could back to Laurel.

Laurel – “Where were you? I was a bit worried.”

Thistle – “Just floating around, nothing dangerous.”

Laurel – “Dangerous? Thistle, what did you do?”

    Thistle – “Nothing, noth…”

Gelis – “It seems we are ready”

Laurel rose and turned to face the land. As she did, she noticed a group of warriors had gathered.

Gelis – “You have items that belong to us.”

Thistle – “I knew it! You weren’t gathering information for us, you were gathering them!”

Laurel – “Don’t tell me, you’re one of those agents of chaos.”

Gelis – “Yes, and hear this, Lord Gerthran wants those artifacts back.”

Laurel – “Oh, nice to have a name attached to your little movement. Sadly for you or Gerthran these artifacts stay with me.”

Laurel prepared her ringblade while Thistle gathered what energy she could to cast spells. Before anyone could make a move, a large wave appeared and engulfed Laurel. The swirling water formed a pocket of air around Laurel and Thistle. A rain of ice spears fell towards the warriors driving them back. The spears were followed by a cloud of mist that blinded them and pushed Gelis away. A small ice platform carried Laurel towards the sea still surrounded by the swirling water.

After a few minutes of traveling on the ice platform the swirling water settled and opened the air pocket. Laurel found herself in the middle of the ocean. In the distance she could make out the large glacier that holds Ixnar. Two other glaciers could be seen in the opposite direction.

Laurel – “Well, what do we do now?”

Thistle – “Uhh, Laurel? There’s something in the water.”

Laurel looked down into the depths. A large figure was slowly rising. To their surprise it was a whale, common to the Frigis Isles. This one was very particular though. Not only was this whale larger than those on the islands, it was also a Sentient. Slowly and carefully it surfaced beside the ice platform.

    Thistle – “Aren’t you a big one.”

Umari – “Greetings, I am Umari. I am the leader of the frost whale tribe of Ixis. We sensed your presence when you entered our world.”

Laurel – “My presence, could it be the ringblade again? Zethia mentioned that my ringblade could be special.”

Umari – “Ah, you know of the Brensur dragon tribe, good.”

Thistle – “Was it you who brought us here?”

Umari – “Yes, we knew you would be pursued. Many of us sentients are interlinked, we can tell our hearts. We knew that sprite was up to no good.”

Thistle – “I need to hone my own heart, I didn’t notice that his intentions were not good from the beginning.”

Umari – “Not all can tell, but surely you can gain this skill easily.”

Thistle – “I’ll try my best. Thank you for protecting us.”

Umari – “There is something you must do. Those who were about to attack you are after artifacts hidden away in those two glaciers that you can see in the distance. Beneath the waters they are linked together. The larger one holds a temple but it can only be accessed through the connected glacier.”

Laurel – “It seems our own artifact search is going to be fruitful. Do you know what the items actually are?”

Umari – “We only know of one. A ring that looks much like the one you wear.”

Laurel – “Then we’ve found the counterpart. This is the Ring of Flames, an artifact from Brensur.”

Umari – “I see, those rings are meant to be worn together. It calls to you even now and compels me to aid you. I will move the platform to the glacier. From there you can dig down into its heart and collect the ring.”

The ice platform moved at great speed towards the smaller of the two glaciers. Once Laurel was on it she used her magic to feel the energy emanating from the ring. She started carving a tunnel through the ice using the power of the Ring of Flames. Inside the glacier were a number of chambers that she could see through the ice. At the center of each was a dimly lit crystal which allowed Laurel to properly align the tunnels she was creating. Little by little she made her way down. The further down, the darker it got. Laurel had to be careful not to bore into the outer wall of the glacier or water would start pouring through. At the very center of the glacier was, once again, a pedestal. Just above it, the ring floated. Water flowed from beneath the pedestal up to a small opening where it flowed outward in four different directions. When Laurel picked up the ring the water stopped flowing. The glacier rumbled and started cracking. Magical energies swirled around Laurel. The artifact bound itself to one of her fingers on the opposing hand which had the Ring of Fire. She could feel as the magical tether that she had formed in her mind with water magic had strengthened tenfold. Her spells could now command the waters with ease, she would need this to escape the collapsing glacier.

Outside of the glacier Thistle watched as parts of that gigantic ice formation began to crumble. Pieces fell into the ocean causing waves. Umari kept watch as well. She swam around the glaciers and spoke to Thistle about Laurel’s progress. The second larger glacier had a temple built inside. There was an entrance directly connected to a chamber on the small glacier Laurel was trying to escape from. With her newly acquired mastery of water magic she moved the ice and froze the water when necessary. She could temporarily stop the water flowing into the chambers by freezing the cracks. At times she built steps to reach the higher chambers. Time was running out. The magic that held this glacier together had all but dissipated. It was now or never. Laurel caused a powerful water spout to push her upward. A combination of water and fire magic. One to create a tunnel to the chamber that connects to the temple entry, the other to push herself through. Once she made it to the temple entrance she saw as the glacier completely broke apart. She also realized this part was still beneath the sea, yet water did not flow into it.

Laurel continued into the temple. A few hundred steps into it and she found herself at a dead end. There was a large brazier at the center of the chamber. Beneath it the words “A light to liven the shadows” were written. Using the magic from the Ring of Flames she ignited the brazier. It ignited for a short time, but then the flames faded. This was not the answer to this puzzle. So she continued to walk around the chamber looking for other clues. On the wall just in front of the brazier was another set of words, they read “A balance of two will create the right amount of light”. By balancing the right amount of both water and fire magic Laurel was able to create an odd blue flame. This kind of fire was unlike anything she had seen before. Instead of it giving off warmth it radiated cold. She placed this cold flame on the brazier and to her surprise it remained lit. The wall that was right in front cracked through the middle and opened to the sides.

The next room was a large and tall chamber. There were many floating rectangular masses of water. Along the way up, there were more braziers to ignite. The water formed a path. Laurel would have to swim up and jump between the strange watery blocks. Slowly but surely she made her way upward, lighting braziers as she moved. A few instances where she almost fell down, but was clever enough to use the water to catch herself. The final pool of water seemed endless. Laurel was already tired from all the swimming and jumping. In order to push herself to the surface she used magic drawn from the Ring of Frost, the one she acquired earlier, to create a current that would carry her upward. This provided a bit of relief. Once at the surface she noticed an icicle at the center of the chamber. A circlet with a slot at the front was being held on this icicle. Without much thought Laurel froze the water in the large pool and used her ringblade to cut the icicle. The icicle proceeded to fall and bury itself on the ice. Laurel walked up to it and cut another part, just beneath the circlet and melted the ice holding the artifact.

While holding the circlet, Laurel wondered about the small slot at the front. The temptation to wear this rather simple looking item was too much. When she did she would feel the powerful magic flowing into her. Even the energy of the two rings felt stronger. Ancient knowledge started teaching her about the circlet. This artifact was named the Circlet of Cold Flames. It was created in a rare alignment when Brensur and Ixis were allied against an unknown force. Its power resonated with the rings.

One more challenge awaited Laurel. An enormous ice block barred her way from the entrance. Also, behind it was a wall of water that would push her away and surely flood the chamber. It was time to test the capabilities of the circlet. Laurel had tried to remove the Ring of Flames once before, this time she was able to do it and place the ring on the slot in the circlet. The circlet itself transformed and created a sort of obsidian crown. She was now overflowing with fire mana. With this energy she could bore a hole in the ice block before her, and so she did. As soon as she was through, water started pouring into the chamber with great force. It was time to test the circlet with the Ring of Frost. She was able to switch the rings in an instant. Now the circlet changed into an ice crown. The boost in water mana allowed Laurel to manipulate the flow of water and use it to create a swirling bubble, much like the one Umari had used before. Laurel continued to combine powers to clear her way through the remainder of the temple. Her mastery of water and fire magic had increased far beyond what she might have anticipated.

At the upper part of the glacier was a large entrance to the temple. This entrance was sealed from the inside by an ice lock and two braziers that needed to be lit. Laurel dealt with these and looked on as the doorway opened. Just outside Thistle was battling Gelis who had caught up with them. Two ships were docked nearby, which meant that the soldiers of chaos were close as well.

    Laurel – “Leave her alone!”

She screamed and let forth a powerful wave of fire that pushed away the sprite. Thistle quickly joined up with Laurel.

Thistle – “Glad you finally got out of there. I felt my energy fading fast.”

    Laurel – “Where’s Umari?”

Thistle – “She was hurt during the attack and swam into the depths. A spear pierced her back.”

Laurel – “You! You’ll pay for hurting Umari!”

Gelis – “She is insignificant! And so are you!”

Gelis prepared to launch ice spears at Laurel. Meanwhile the soldiers gathered behind the sprite, weapons drawn. Laurel and Thistle were outnumbered but Laurel refused to give up.

Gelis – “Give me the artifacts and I promise I will spare you.”

Laurel – “No, you’ve already caused harm. I will stop you here and now!”

The ice spears flew forward as the soldiers behind Gelis charged at Laurel. Using the magic she had learned, and her newfound mastery, Laurel deflected the spears and flung powerful cold flames towards the soldiers. Their feet became frozen, stuck to the floor of the temple entryway. Gelis shielded himself from the flames, but couldn’t withstand the next attack. Laurel launched a beam of fiery energy at Gelis. He tried to use his magic shield but it broke away.

    Thistle – “What now?”

    Laurel – “I don’t know. I don’t want to kill them.”

Laurel’s hesitation was dangerous in such a situation, but instead of actually carrying out such a heavy penance she decided to use the ice to immobilize the soldiers further. As for Gelis he seemed to have become stunned.

Laurel – “We should go while we still have a chance.”

Thistle – “Oh! I have an idea, let’s burn their ships down, that way they’ll be stuck here.”

Laurel – “That is a great idea, I’ll lend you some mana. You take the left one, I’ll take the right one.”

The winds carried the smoke of the burning ships towards Ixnar. People there were surprised and many were scared because it could mean a potential invasion. Laurel found Umari again. She had resurfaced, but still had a spear stuck on her. Healing magic was available to every element, but Laurel chose to use healing water magic to remove the spear and seal the wound. Umari in return carried them back near the shores of Ixnar. This time Laurel created an ice platform for herself.

Umari – “You have grown greatly in such a short time.”

Laurel – “These artifacts have unlocked a potential I didn’t know existed within me. They feel more my own even when they are ancient.”

Umari – “Good, your familiarity with them will aid you in your adventure. Other Sentients in the other worlds may lend a hand, but be wary always. Not all of us are free from the chaotic influence.”

Laurel – “Wait, do you know more about all this?”

Umari – “No, but it feels like the problems surfacing now are bound by chaos.”

Laurel – “Alright, I’ll keep working hard to discover what’s going on. At least now we have a name to research, Gerthran.”

Thistle – “That was the person Gelis mentioned, right?”

Laurel – “Yeah. Now I wonder what Lumos uncovered. Thank you for all your help Umari.”

Umari – “You are welcome. Farewell!”

Thistle – “Bye Umari! Hey Laurel let’s get…”

Before Thistle could finish a beam of energy could be seen coming from the castle and heading in the direction of the world portal. Laurel and Thistle made their way to the castle as fast as they could.
