Episode 17: Trial of Wind
In a bright flash of light Lidya, Byron and Peter arrive at Utoas. The great sky city is home to the council of wind. So far, Damien’s forces have not been able to crack the amount of energy needed to gain access to it. Only someone with a certain level of mastery can figure this out, as Byron did.
Right at the entryway a few soldiers were stationed along with one of the council members. Councilman Milio approached them eagerly.
Milio – “Are you perhaps Lidya?”
Lidya – “I am… wait, how would you know?”
Milio – “Despite having our communication crystal broken, we found a way to communicate with the council of the Fernal region. They’ve been helping us prepare, though it has been taxing as such communication requires a sustained spell.”
Peter – “That sounds like a clever way to bypass what Damien did.”
Milio – “Indeed. We have been able to prepare the soldiers stationed here to face off against the inevitable invasion.”
Byron – “You may be safe here, but people on the ground are in danger.”
Milio – “We are aware. That is why we are preparing to launch our own attacks against Damien and his forces. At the very least we want to drive them back from the area surrounding the portal to Utoas.”
Lidya – “Then we’ll do our part to help. We have to face the trial of wind.”
Milio – “And face it you will. The trial course is just outside this room. Anyone seeking to reach the farthest part of the city must go through this. Your swiftness and accuracy will be tested and be careful, it’s a long way down.”
Lidya began to tap into wind magic as soon as the trial started. Byron, Peter and Lidya stepped out of the arrival chamber and saw a course of moving platforms, fierce winds and powered down devices. The massive contraption was only active during a trial, so that visitors would have a chance to move around the city without too much trouble. Regardless, users of wind magic were the most common visitors.
Byron carries a bow and a sword. He helped guide Lidya and Peter. Although Peter had great magical knowledge, he could still not tap into the magical tether that provided wind energy. It was up to Byron and Lidya to traverse the course using their magic and helping Peter move ahead.
Byron – “Here, I can help. Focus your energy to transform one of your weapons into a bow. Now, use that same energy to create an arrow of wind. Afterwards shoot it at the windmill there, it will power some of the contraptions.”
Lidya – “Alright, I can do that. You’ve done this before?”
Byron – “I… passed this test months ago, but I declined to enter Rallion.”
Lidya – “Hmm, any particular reason?”
Byron – “I wanted to be with someone dear to me.”
Lidya – “I see.”
Peter – “Would you two hurry it up? I’m still stuck down here.”
The strong winds prevented Peter from summoning magical wings and his lack of wind magic didn’t allow him to power the devices on his own. Byron and Lidya pulled Peter up from a platform beneath them. The group climbed, jumped and braved the gusts as they moved along the maze. At one point a simple tunnel with a strong wind current kept pushing them back.
Peter – “How are we supposed to cross this? It feels like the wind could carry us out of the city!”
Byron – “Our magic can adjust the flow as we move along. The currents should pass by you effortlessly. You’ll have to focus to create an aura of wind energy.”
Lidya – “I’ll try my best.”
Peter – “And I’ll figure something out for myself, there’s no way I can channel the needed wind magic.”
Lidya took a few steps forward. The wind current created a powerful force that resisted her attempt at moving through. Each step required more effort than the last. Meanwhile Byron walked as if a simple breeze flowed. This motivated Lidya to focus on her wind magic. When she realized she could cast the aura spell needed to cross she immediately did so. After a few short minutes both Byron and Lidya had crossed the tunnel. Peter, though still hindered by the winds, was able to cross using a magic shield that could deflect the wind. Not the most efficient way to cross, but with a little help from Byron he was able to join them.
Lidya – “Glad you could make it.”
Peter – “I’m trying my best ok? I can’t link to wind magic like you.”
Byron – “I’m surprised to see someone so adept at learning to wield different elements. Is there some special secret to it?”
Lidya – “No secret in particular. At least not one I’m aware of. My weapons help with channeling energy, but the feeling of each elemental tether comes natural to me.”
Peter – “Damien was able to achieve this many years ago, surely others could have tried this before.”
Lidya – “No one ever really had to, once they passed the trial many left to the respective world.”
Byron – “Indeed. The trials themselves left us with few who would willingly learn more than one element. Especially considering these are difficult challenges.”
Peter – “We should keep going. These stairs look perilous, but they’re the only way up.”
Byron – “At the top we should find some devices that require lightning energy to power. It should open the doorway to the council chambers.”
Lidya – “We’re close, let’s push on!”
The staircase spiraled up, at the center a square shaped abyss threatened the group. Wind currents here shifted wildly and it took all their strength to keep moving ahead. Once at the council chamber doorway they saw three orbs that needed to be powered by lightning. The orbs needed to be powered simultaneously. Knowing they couldn’t all channel the needed energy Lidya and Byron took it upon themselves to unleash a powerful electric current. As soon as they did the doors blasted open, but shortly after started to close. Byron hinted at Lidya to cover herself and Peter with a wind gust to boost them through the closing doors. Although the doors quickly closed behind them, they made it safely through.
Inside the chamber awaited the council of wind and standing in front of the council members was Aldus along with Milio. He traveled with haste to deliver a gift from the Entralian council. It was a bow. The council of wind infused it with as much of their own magic as they could. It was something they thought would be needed for the inevitable face off against Damien. Along with the bow an armor set that had been stowed away in Utoas was also given to Lidya.
Aldus – “You herald our hopes that Damien can be stopped. Since you have gained knowledge and mastery over multiple elements it is only natural that we provide you with some additional help.”
Lidya – “Thank you, but what about my friends?”
Aldus – “We will provide for them as well. I have already sent word to the council of earth so that they prepare for Marx and Lorenzo’s arrival.”
Lidya – “That’s a relief. I’m glad the council is moving to action.”
Aldus – “Yes, well, we cannot sit idly while Damien ravages our lands. It is our responsibility to help as much as we can.”
Peter – “What now? Do we join up with them at…?”
Before Peter could finish a messenger arrived with dire news. Marx and Lorenzo had been captured by Damien’s generals.
Lidya – “Damn, I have to go help them!”
Aldus – “Be careful Lidya. Damien’s generals are not to be taken lightly. Each of them is a master of their element. We know there are six in total. Two are masters of fire magic. One is named Nathaniel and the second is only known as the Red Knight. Clad in crimson armor his true identity is unknown. Eliza, the woman you faced in the trial, is a master of dark magic. Next we have Thana, her mastery lies in light magic. Finally we have the two brothers, Morg and Gorm. While Morg commands water magic with ease, Gorm is more talented and wields both earth and wind magic.
Byron – “They have all their flanks covered. We’re going to need more help.”
Lidya – “We can only hope we find more warriors in the remaining trial.”
Milio – “Utoas will use its resources to help in whatever way we can.”
Byron – “I know someone who will join us in a heartbeat. He’s a very close friend of mine and an adept earth magic wielder.”
Peter – “Our group is becoming a formidable force. I fear we must make haste to aid Marx and Lorenzo.”
Aldus – “I will keep you no more. Go, find your friends, master earth magic and defeat Damien’s generals!”
The group left the council chambers hoping that the forces of Utoas will help turn the tide or at least hold off Damien’s forces while they head out to rescue Marx and Lorenzo. The last trial will have Lidya learning earth magic. This will likely place her on a level playing field before facing off against Damien.
