    TennoCon 2024

After a few days to let the hype die down a bit I feel I can make a quick recap of my trip to London, Ontario for TennoCon 2024. This might be a bit of a mixed chronicle as I will also write a little about London itself. To preface this I must point out that this was my first time in Canada as well as my first international flight.

London, Ontario, was the location hosting TennoCon 2024. The city itself felt rather empty at first. Having been to New York and Boston it felt like a stark contrast. Of course, this is a small city, I would not expect it to be as bustling. The parks were really nice, like the nearby Victoria Park and the parks beside the Thames river. Not that I was able to experience much more of the city as I only spent four days there. Three days, considering I left early Sunday morning. Food was great. Reset Social Cafe being my favorite place. Great coffee and the downtown city vibe really clicked with me.

Now, onto the main event. TennoCon 2024 was essentially split into two parts. The first was TennoVIP. A special event with unique activities, music and karaoke held inside a large tent beside the convention center. Early Friday morning attendees could get their badge and visit the merch store. Both of these had very long lines so waiting was the order of the day. Later that afternoon people started queuing up for the TennoVIP event. Another line, but this time a lot of it was spent under the hot summer sun. Originally I thought it would be fine. Temperatures early that day were fair, but that did not hold as it is obviously the middle of summer. This made waiting to get into the TennoVIP tent a bit of an ordeal. The tent also had a limited capacity, meaning that the line had to be held multiple times to allow people to get through the activities inside. Once inside there was this big party vibe, accompanied by, you guessed it, more lines. Overall the activities were a good idea, but the execution itself felt lacking. These needed to be accessible to everyone, so it would’ve made sense to have these somewhere else, possibly outside the tent. That way, the tent itself could have been the focus for the drinks and the stage.

Saturday was the big day for TennoCon. That day was going to host the big reveals of the next updates coming to Warframe as well as showcase what they’ve been working on with Soulframe. First up was the Soulframe devstream at 12. In terms of visuals a lot of Soulframe looks great. Though there were a few hiccups particularly with a number of particle effects and flashes that often obscured the action. Some combat animations seemed off, but this is part of the nature of an in development game. Especially when it has only been in development for a relatively short time. Afterwards there were two more panels and a cosplay contest. Sadly I missed the art panel because I needed lunch. In it a few neat tidbits were shown. A concept of the next heirloom skin for the Rhino warframe and also the next prime warframe, Sevagoth Prime. Following that we got the sound panel which is brilliant as always. Lots of cool background for their creation of sounds and music. The cosplay contest was next after that.

Finally the main showcase arrived, the Warframe devstream, TennoLive. In it they confirmed there would be a total of three updates coming for the remainder of the year, starting with The Lotus Eaters in August. There were few previews for much of the content, one of which was a rework for the warframe Caliban as well as a new deluxe skin for it. They will also hold another info drop at Tokyo Game Show. Then came the big gameplay showcase for Warframe: 1999. In it we got to see other protoframes, one of which is a new warframe coming with that update (Quincy, Cyte-09). This showcase was brilliant. We got a walkthrough of at least the first part of the quest. A new faction, called Scaldra, was introduced here. The showcase ended with the reveal that a new kind of adversary, the Infested Coda, would make its entrance with this update.

TennoCon was an amazing experience overall. The energy felt in that large auditorium was unlike anything. There is a lot of excitement for the future of Warframe. Meanwhile, for Soulframe, I hope that it can continue to improve and adjust its systems as development goes on. Next year’s TennoCon will be held July 18-19 in 2025. It will be the tenth iteration of the event.

  • Red Ink

A village archivist finds an enigmatic red crystal at the shores of a nearby river. With it he discovered he could write the most exquisite red ink. This archivist also wrote various different stories that had met with some minor success. After he started to write with the crystal however, his stories began to reach far and wide. Even his reports to the mayor seem to have gained some flair. As time went on a sudden illness struck the village. People began to die of an unknown disease. The archivist meanwhile continued his work and was set on writing his best story yet, but before he could finish tragedy struck. The illness fell upon his own family. His parents, who worked the village mill, had become weak and sickly. Feeling an immense sadness the archivist could write no more of the story. A newfound goal was now his target, to uncover the secret of the illness. To do this, he had to leave the village to travel the world. Perhaps out there he could find a cure.

Months passed by in an instant. Soon a whole year was gone. Sadly, the archivist had learned nothing of the disease. Upon his return to the village he discovered that most of those still alive and sick had recovered. Happy to see his family healthy again, the archivist began his work anew. Merely a few weeks after his return, so did the disease. The small village was quick to gather and they surmised that it was this lone archivist’s fault. Despite not having any real proof of the matter, the villagers resolved to cast him out. His parents were devastated by the news. All they could do was prepare him for his journey. The archivist, his heart torn, lost his will to write. Using what few directions his parents provided, he figured he would travel around and perhaps discover his passion for writing once again.

As time went on he found other scattered villages. The remnants of a once powerful kingdom that collapsed under the pressure of a sickness much like the one that struck his own people. He passed the ruins of a great city, now home to nothing and to no one. A faded path west led him to a lighthouse. This towering structure lay seemingly at the edge of the world. In one of the windows an old lady watched as this traveler approached. When he arrived she received him with a warm welcome and offered him some tea. Waves crashed on the rocks below. Shielded from the cold winds that drifted up from the sea, the archivist let out a sigh of relief. He sat down and explained his situation to the old lady. As he did this, her eyes widened. She had been through something similar before. The archivist, knowing she might have some insight, pulled out a piece of parchment and the red crystal. Before he could write a single letter, the lady bid him to place down the crystal on the table. He did so, and also set aside the parchment.

Long ago, the old lady explained, she used to be an archivist herself. She would write down the great king’s decrees and record historical events. One day she discovered this same crystal. In the same way that the villagers fell ill, so did the citizens of the kingdom. Eventually very little was left of it. What few that survived scattered across the land. The king himself, stricken with grief over the loss of his people and his family, eventually hanged himself. Undaunted by the tragedies unfolding around her, the lady decided to research the crystal. Deep within the kingdom’s archive, she discovered the mention of a Bloodstone. Her discovery was shocking. She could not contain her sorrow and anger. So much so that in the last days of the kingdom, she fled to the lighthouse and threw the Bloodstone down into the rocks. Thinking that she would watch over this area, she decided to live here. She was to be a guardian of sorts. The archivist was stunned into silence. The villagers were not too far from the truth, he was ultimately the cause of the disease. The old lady told the young man to bring the crystal outside. There, at a rusted anvil, they could end this artifact’s vile corruption. Although the archivist hesitated for a moment, he knew that this suffering could not repeat itself. Placing the Bloodstone on the anvil the old lady took a swing of a large hammer she had as the archivist looked on. As soon as the hammer crushed the crystal, its shards flew every which way. Then, after a few seconds these shards scattered into the winds as dust. A wave of magical energy burst forth throwing these two onto the floor. Their souls ripped away, claimed by the ancient magics of the Bloodstone.

    Oversaturation

If you take a look at the videogame industry it appears it is at a point where it is heavily bloated by the amount of games being produced. This bloat makes it more and more difficult for games to stand out. It also makes it harder for aspiring developers to enter the industry and find any kind of success. This is aggravated by live service games. As these kinds of games proliferate there is greater competition for a player’s time. Since games can persist for so long it has become an uphill climb to create something that will pull a player away from established franchises or live service games. Live service games are a result of the ongoing changes in videogame development and technological advances. The ability to update games so easily has made this kind of game more viable. Although some development practices will sometimes allow a game to launch in a broken state, only to be patched shortly after launch. The focus on live service by a lot of developers has also clogged the market. They need to stand out greatly in order to retain a large enough player base that can invest in the game.

A short scroll through Steam and anyone can see the vast amount of games on offer. Even the Switch’s own storefront is filled with hundreds of games that have little chance to stand out. This may be discouraging for future developers. The industry can be unforgiving and the investment of time and resources makes this all the more inaccessible to anyone who does not have the funding for it.

The amount of layoffs in the videogames industry is a direct result of this oversaturation. What once was a growing industry, now needs to scale down. This is coupled by game projects being cyclical, unless the developer plans ahead with numerous projects. A large videogame may require a large amount of artists and programmers, but once the game is out in the market only a small few are retained to provide maintenance. Contract work is popular in the industry as it provides an easy way out for a company. There is, of course, no excuse for the layoffs. It is a lack of planning that results in this. The livelihood of so many people is constantly changing because the videogames industry has allowed the failings of management to permeate.

To conclude, the videogames market has the biggest amount of games it ever has. This works against discoverability of games published by indies or single developers unless the game itself can stand out. So unless the game comes from an already established franchise or studio it might not find the success it needs to help the creator survive in the current economic environment.

    Game Industry Overlook

Here we are once again. For gamers the month of June is always an interesting time. Although we’ve lost the big, super hyped event of E3, companies still take this time to bring forward their future slate. Already Sony has a State of Play (on 5/30/2024) and Nintendo has confirmed they will hold a June Direct presentation. Other game companies also have their own events in the coming weeks. Summer Game Fest continues to try and hijack the hype by promoting the presentations as its own thing. Personally I’ve soured on anything Keighley related after the debacle that was The Game Awards 2023. In that event developers were constantly given the cold shoulder, rushed out of their acceptance speeches to give way to a slew of promos. Mind you, we all love to see the shiny new trailers of anticipated games or some such, but it should not have come at the cost of almost literally pushing developers aside. That said, the videogames industry has been in a rather tumultuous state in recent months. Studio closings and employees being fired have shown how unstable the industry really is. Even having critical acclaim has not stopped a studio from being closed, case in point Tango Gameworks being shuttered. Microsoft has been in hot water recently. After their acquisition of Activision Blizzard they proceeded to lay off a large number of employees as well.

Despite the problems mentioned before the amount of games in the market seems staggering. Which, in turn means that there is far more competition for player’s time. Live service games in particular want, or rather, need this high time investment to retain players. The more players spend within these the more likely they are to invest some money into the game.

In other matters, Sony has mentioned that its PS5 is in its last legs. Meanwhile the Nintendo Switch has blazed its own path, despite being seven years old and considered aged by the time it launched. As the complexity of game development continues to grow, so does the amount of time that is required to make them. Games that focus on realism, open worlds and vast complex systems will take longer and longer to make. This will also affect the investment needed and will probably be the excuse executives need to justify a price increase for base games. Then again, game pricing is now muddled because of DLC, in-game purchases and the like. The cost of games is already high for “Triple-A” games. The third big name in the Industry, Microsoft, has been investing its way trying to gain a market share by using well established development studios as a springboard. They want to particularly add more to their game pass subscription. On the other hand, independent developers have the right idea providing smaller, more manageable experiences that are often less costly. The big companies’ drive for profit will either end up in more layoffs or in failure. The continued push for increased game complexity is also a worrying trend, though not one that all studios can manage.

There is still quite a bit to look forward to. Hopefully the industry can stabilize, though the problems listed here are a symptom of a wider economic problem. On the horizon we have a new system that has already been mentioned by Nintendo. Sony will most likely continue their own trend, maybe a PS5 pro or, dare I say, PS6. Meanwhile Microsoft currently feels like a bit of an underdog. The existence of the PC market eats away at Xbox’s market share more so than from the others. Exclusives will continue to drive people to Sony and Nintendo. Whatever reveals we see in the coming weeks will be interesting. They will give a glimpse of what’s next for the remainder of the year.

  • Author’s Chronicle #8

    Greetings,

Work on this blog stopped last summer so that I could accommodate some contract work I received from August to February of this year. It is my intention to return to writing once again, at least until I can complete some of the stories that I left pending. One of them is Seven Worlds, though I have some others in the pipeline waiting for new drafts.

I admit it had become increasingly difficult to find the motivation to write. My own worries and self doubt cluttered my mind. Its like a dense fog that makes it hard to navigate through thoughts. Regardless I want to try again and continue the work I started. As the blog nears 100 followers I remain, as ever, thankful for those who have chosen to read my stories. May they continue to prove at least a bit entertaining. Also to note, I will add few other writings like the gaming chronicles (where I express my opinion on the video game industry) to further flesh out the blog.

  • Seven Worlds – Ep17

    Episode 17: Trial of Wind

In a bright flash of light Lidya, Byron and Peter arrive at Utoas. The great sky city is home to the council of wind. So far, Damien’s forces have not been able to crack the amount of energy needed to gain access to it. Only someone with a certain level of mastery can figure this out, as Byron did.

Right at the entryway a few soldiers were stationed along with one of the council members. Councilman Milio approached them eagerly.

Milio – “Are you perhaps Lidya?”

Lidya – “I am… wait, how would you know?”

Milio – “Despite having our communication crystal broken, we found a way to communicate with the council of the Fernal region. They’ve been helping us prepare, though it has been taxing as such communication requires a sustained spell.”

Peter – “That sounds like a clever way to bypass what Damien did.”

Milio – “Indeed. We have been able to prepare the soldiers stationed here to face off against the inevitable invasion.”

Byron – “You may be safe here, but people on the ground are in danger.”

Milio – “We are aware. That is why we are preparing to launch our own attacks against Damien and his forces. At the very least we want to drive them back from the area surrounding the portal to Utoas.”

Lidya – “Then we’ll do our part to help. We have to face the trial of wind.”

Milio – “And face it you will. The trial course is just outside this room. Anyone seeking to reach the farthest part of the city must go through this. Your swiftness and accuracy will be tested and be careful, it’s a long way down.”

Lidya began to tap into wind magic as soon as the trial started. Byron, Peter and Lidya stepped out of the arrival chamber and saw a course of moving platforms, fierce winds and powered down devices. The massive contraption was only active during a trial, so that visitors would have a chance to move around the city without too much trouble. Regardless, users of wind magic were the most common visitors.

Byron carries a bow and a sword. He helped guide Lidya and Peter. Although Peter had great magical knowledge, he could still not tap into the magical tether that provided wind energy. It was up to Byron and Lidya to traverse the course using their magic and helping Peter move ahead.

Byron – “Here, I can help. Focus your energy to transform one of your weapons into a bow. Now, use that same energy to create an arrow of wind. Afterwards shoot it at the windmill there, it will power some of the contraptions.”

Lidya – “Alright, I can do that. You’ve done this before?”

Byron – “I… passed this test months ago, but I declined to enter Rallion.”

Lidya – “Hmm, any particular reason?”

Byron – “I wanted to be with someone dear to me.”

    Lidya – “I see.”

Peter – “Would you two hurry it up? I’m still stuck down here.”

The strong winds prevented Peter from summoning magical wings and his lack of wind magic didn’t allow him to power the devices on his own. Byron and Lidya pulled Peter up from a platform beneath them. The group climbed, jumped and braved the gusts as they moved along the maze. At one point a simple tunnel with a strong wind current kept pushing them back.

Peter – “How are we supposed to cross this? It feels like the wind could carry us out of the city!”

Byron – “Our magic can adjust the flow as we move along. The currents should pass by you effortlessly. You’ll have to focus to create an aura of wind energy.”

Lidya – “I’ll try my best.”

Peter – “And I’ll figure something out for myself, there’s no way I can channel the needed wind magic.”

Lidya took a few steps forward. The wind current created a powerful force that resisted her attempt at moving through. Each step required more effort than the last. Meanwhile Byron walked as if a simple breeze flowed. This motivated Lidya to focus on her wind magic. When she realized she could cast the aura spell needed to cross she immediately did so. After a few short minutes both Byron and Lidya had crossed the tunnel. Peter, though still hindered by the winds, was able to cross using a magic shield that could deflect the wind. Not the most efficient way to cross, but with a little help from Byron he was able to join them.

Lidya – “Glad you could make it.”

Peter – “I’m trying my best ok? I can’t link to wind magic like you.”

Byron – “I’m surprised to see someone so adept at learning to wield different elements. Is there some special secret to it?”

Lidya – “No secret in particular. At least not one I’m aware of. My weapons help with channeling energy, but the feeling of each elemental tether comes natural to me.”

Peter – “Damien was able to achieve this many years ago, surely others could have tried this before.”

Lidya – “No one ever really had to, once they passed the trial many left to the respective world.”

Byron – “Indeed. The trials themselves left us with few who would willingly learn more than one element. Especially considering these are difficult challenges.”

Peter – “We should keep going. These stairs look perilous, but they’re the only way up.”

Byron – “At the top we should find some devices that require lightning energy to power. It should open the doorway to the council chambers.”

    Lidya – “We’re close, let’s push on!”

The staircase spiraled up, at the center a square shaped abyss threatened the group. Wind currents here shifted wildly and it took all their strength to keep moving ahead. Once at the council chamber doorway they saw three orbs that needed to be powered by lightning. The orbs needed to be powered simultaneously. Knowing they couldn’t all channel the needed energy Lidya and Byron took it upon themselves to unleash a powerful electric current. As soon as they did the doors blasted open, but shortly after started to close. Byron hinted at Lidya to cover herself and Peter with a wind gust to boost them through the closing doors. Although the doors quickly closed behind them, they made it safely through.

Inside the chamber awaited the council of wind and standing in front of the council members was Aldus along with Milio. He traveled with haste to deliver a gift from the Entralian council. It was a bow. The council of wind infused it with as much of their own magic as they could. It was something they thought would be needed for the inevitable face off against Damien. Along with the bow an armor set that had been stowed away in Utoas was also given to Lidya.

Aldus – “You herald our hopes that Damien can be stopped. Since you have gained knowledge and mastery over multiple elements it is only natural that we provide you with some additional help.”

Lidya – “Thank you, but what about my friends?”

Aldus – “We will provide for them as well. I have already sent word to the council of earth so that they prepare for Marx and Lorenzo’s arrival.”

Lidya – “That’s a relief. I’m glad the council is moving to action.”

Aldus – “Yes, well, we cannot sit idly while Damien ravages our lands. It is our responsibility to help as much as we can.”

Peter – “What now? Do we join up with them at…?”

Before Peter could finish a messenger arrived with dire news. Marx and Lorenzo had been captured by Damien’s generals.

Lidya – “Damn, I have to go help them!”

Aldus – “Be careful Lidya. Damien’s generals are not to be taken lightly. Each of them is a master of their element. We know there are six in total. Two are masters of fire magic. One is named Nathaniel and the second is only known as the Red Knight. Clad in crimson armor his true identity is unknown. Eliza, the woman you faced in the trial, is a master of dark magic. Next we have Thana, her mastery lies in light magic. Finally we have the two brothers, Morg and Gorm. While Morg commands water magic with ease, Gorm is more talented and wields both earth and wind magic.

Byron – “They have all their flanks covered. We’re going to need more help.”

Lidya – “We can only hope we find more warriors in the remaining trial.”

Milio – “Utoas will use its resources to help in whatever way we can.”

Byron – “I know someone who will join us in a heartbeat. He’s a very close friend of mine and an adept earth magic wielder.”

Peter – “Our group is becoming a formidable force. I fear we must make haste to aid Marx and Lorenzo.”

Aldus – “I will keep you no more. Go, find your friends, master earth magic and defeat Damien’s generals!”

The group left the council chambers hoping that the forces of Utoas will help turn the tide or at least hold off Damien’s forces while they head out to rescue Marx and Lorenzo. The last trial will have Lidya learning earth magic. This will likely place her on a level playing field before facing off against Damien.

  • Seven Worlds – Ep16

    Episode 16: Preparations

The trial of water was now complete. After resting at the Inn the group planned for their next steps. Marx suggested they split up to cover more ground. Lidya and Peter would go take the trial of wind, while Marx and Lorenzo took the trial of earth.

Marx – “My advice to both of you, wind is swift. It flows around its opponents with ease.”

Peter – “Tapping into the magical tether of the element isn’t easy. I don’t think I have the skill for it, but I don’t doubt Lidya can achieve it.”

Lidya – “I think my weapons also help with that, them being fairly unique, right Marx?”

Marx – “Don’t sell yourself short Lidya. You do have skill to manage the other elements, it just takes you a little less time than other people.”

Lorenzo – “And time is something we do not have to spare.”

Marx – “Indeed. Wind magic is also particular in terms of the weapons aligned to it.”

Lidya – “Weapons? There’s more than one?”

Marx – “Yes, swords are aligned with wind magic, as well as bows. Mastery of marksmanship and wind magic can even help warriors form arrows of lightning.”

    Lidya – “Sounds powerful.”

Marx – “It is, but also very rare. Very few can reach such mastery.”

Lidya – “Is that a challenge?”

Peter – “Will you guys be alright taking the trial of earth?”

Marx – “We should be fine. The weapon bound to earth is the hammer. Although heavier than our axes, it should be easy to adapt our combat style.”

Lorenzo – “Practice will serve us well. Especially since it will be a long trek to Scillion.”

Marx – “Yes. I suspect Damien’s forces will move to take more territory around the trial grounds. The trial grounds of earth, a region called Scillion, are probably their main target. If we can intercept some of their troops we can hinder them. The trial of wind should be relatively safe to take on. That should make your own work simpler.”

Peter – “A sound strategy. Will you two be able to handle it?”

Marx – “We’ll be careful. Our main goal is to take the trial and stall Damien’s forces as much as possible. Stay in touch, remember to use the communication spheres.”

Lidya – “Oh, right, I had almost forgotten about those.”

Peter – “Then we should get moving.”

Lidya – “Agreed. See you guys later!”

The trip to the trial grounds of wind would take them a few days to complete. For Marx and Lorenzo it will take even longer to reach the region of Scillion. As the groups travel to their destinations, inside a castle somewhere in Entralia, Damien has called his generals to report in. The top generals, Morg, Thana, Nathaniel, Eliza, Gorm and an enigmatic yet mysterious knight in crimson armor kneeled before him.

Damien – “Rise. Tell me, how goes the war?”

Morg – “My lord, we received a report about a small group that left the Frigis isles not long ago.”

Damien – “That is likely Lidya and her companions. Where are they headed now?”

Morg – “They defeated Valeria, freed the people of Norgar and, according to our scouts they are headed to Utoas.”

Thana – “The flying city remains out of our reach for now. We have also received reports that another group is moving to Scillion.”

Damien – “That wench has been successful in moving through the trials. Although her challenge is a nuisance it will be a stronger message when I finally cut her down.”

Eliza – “My lord, I failed to defeat Lidya at Balancor. I assure you I will not fail again.”

Thana – “I’ll slay you myself if you do.”

Damien – “Silence Thana! She is aware of the punishment should she fail again.”

Gorm – “My brother and I stand ready to face any threats. Our forces have already set out for Scillion.”

Nathaniel – “What of this knight my lord? Do you trust him?”

Damien – “He is my finest creation yet. Trust will not be something to worry about. This Red Knight will lead the next assault on Fernal.”

Red Knight – “By your will.”

Nathaniel – “Then nothing will stand in our way. Both the Mindscape and the Nightmare Warp will fall to my troops soon.”

Damien – “Let your devotion to me guide you. This world will tremble before my might! Go! Spread my influence while I make the final preparations.”

Damien’s generals set out on their respective missions. A multitude of his troops now spread across the continent heralded a conflict that would surely be devastating. It falls to Lidya, her companions and whoever they can find that can provide them support.

The days of travel allowed Lidya time to practice using wind magic. So far she could channel a good amount of wind energy, but still not enough to transform her weapons. While they approached the area where the trial of wind begins they come across a warrior who is hiding nearby. After questioning them about their presence there, he introduced himself as Byron.

Byron – “I’m glad you’re against these soldiers, but things seem bleak. A village west of here was attacked. Most people were taken prisoner. I heard some would be put into forced labor.”

Lidya – “Damn, is there a way we can intercept the soldiers that attacked the village?”

Byron – “Not anymore, this happened a few days ago.”

Peter – “We started traveling from the Frigis Isles around that time. Damien’s forces are moving fast.”

Byron – “There is some hope that we could get reinforcements from Utoas. The sky city has a lot of soldiers stationed there.”

Lidya – “That would be perfect, we take the trial and also gain a way to strike back at Damien.”

Byron – “So far the soldiers haven’t figured how much power is needed to activate the portal here. I’ve spent quite some time honing my wind magic. I think I should be able to calibrate the energy needed to open the portal device.”

Peter – “Hey Lidya, sounds like he could also help you master wind magic.”

Lidya – “I could use some pointers, if you don’t mind.”

Byron – “Sure, we can train once we reach the city. If we go through the trial together we improve our chances of passing it unscathed.”

Lidya – “Alright Byron, we’re trusting you with this.”

Byron – “Don’t worry, those soldiers will pay for what they did. Besides, I have someone I must meet afterwards.”

Peter – “Then let’s make haste.”

The area around the portal was unguarded. Damien’s soldiers had left, they awaited elsewhere for their general to arrive. The trio of warriors snuck into the area effortlessly. Byron took a short time to channel his magic into four orbs. These orbs were placed around a central rune circle that slowly lit up. When the energy was sufficient the magic of the portal transformed all three of them into lightning bolts that shot upward to the sky city Utoas. As soon as they left, the glow subsided leaving no trace of them.

  • Seven Worlds – Ep15

    Episode 15: Trial of Water

After a few days on the road, further north from Fernal, the group of Lidya, Marx, Lorenzo and Peter arrive at the port town of Galis. At the small dock a number of fishermen can be seen tending to their catch. A boatsman stops the group and presents himself as Largan.

Largan – “Where might you be headed?”

Lidya – “We seek passage to the Frigis Isles.”

Largan – “Ah, ready for your trial? It’ll cost you a bit, but I can take you there. I must warn you though, there are rumors that the world portal isn’t working anymore.”

Lorenzo – “We are aware of that. It is the reason we are here.”

Lidya – “Well then Largan, it seems you’ll be our ferry to the isles.”

Largan – “As long as you pay up.”

Marx – Here. This should do.”

Peter – “Ah, I forgot the council provided us with some coins.”

Marx – “Precisely for such an occasion, we might not need it for much else.”

Lorenzo – “Let us proceed then.”

While on the boat Marx talked to Lidya about how to start accessing her own water magic. This would prove to be difficult for her. Thankfully, just before arriving at their destination Lidya began to feel the energy of the element coursing through her.

Largan – “Alright, off with you then. The trial starts here. There are boats on the other side of the glacier. It’s not a long walk, but you’ll have to brave the cold. Once there you must navigate using water magic until you reach the next destination. The currents will guide you.”

Peter – “Sounds like you’ve done this before.”

Largan – “Ah, maybe once, but I learned that Ixis wasn’t for me so I stayed behind.”

    Marx – “You’re a warrior then?”

Largan – “More of a ferryman these days, with the occasional fishing.”

Marx – “Too bad, we could’ve used a master of water magic.”

Largan – “Hah! True mastery eluded me way back then. Regardless, Best of luck to you!”

The boatsman left, leaving the others to begin their trek through the glacier. A small breeze was enough to get everyone shaking. Being a mixed group with varying magical abilities each one responded to the cold in their own way. Lorenzo and Marx cast a simple heat enchantment over their bodies. Peter cloaked himself in shadow energy that could better tolerate the cold. Meanwhile Lidya used the very magic she was learning to gain resistance to the cold. The bright sunny day helped to stem feeling more uncomfortable, but the cold winds were still a hindrance. When they reached the boats only one was large enough to hold all four of them. It was now up to Lidya to navigate the currents.

Currents around the isles are treacherous. They change on a whim and often create whirlpools dragging anyone inexperienced into the depths. Lidya would have to focus her mind intensely to command the currents to carry them safely through. Little by little the currents carried their boat across the sea. As they neared the island a thick mist rolled in, obscuring their sight.

Marx – “Lidya, are you sure you know where to go?”

Lidya – “Quiet! I can’t focus with you blabbering. Yes, I can still feel my way around. The flow of the currents can help me continue.”

Lorenzo – “This fog appears to be another of the challenges. There must have been some magical trigger.”

Lidya – “There is a lot of water magic here. Discerning the flow of mana, the wards and spells in the area has been an interesting exercise.”

In a few moments their boat landed on a snowbank. The jolt nearly made them fall forward. The dense fog permeated the area. It would be difficult to continue. Together they moved on into the dense mist. Their approach was careful, but despite trying to remain close Marx and Peter ended up moving too far into the mist. Before they realized Lidya and Lorenzo were nowhere near.

Lidya – “Hold my hand Lorenzo. We can’t get split up.”

Lorenzo – “I would ask the same of Marx and Peter, but I cannot see nor hear them.”

Lidya – “Darn, we’ll have to move on without them. They should be fine on their own.”

As Marx and Peter walked around they remained close keeping their backs to each other. By now they had sensed something was off.

Peter – “There’s something, or more likely, someone inside this mist.”

Marx – “Yeah, I felt the change too. I think I’ve had enough of this fog.”

Peter – “It might not be enough to just cast spells blindly. Here, I’ll cast a spell to extend our senses if anyone tries anything we will know in advance.

Peter’s strategy was quick to work. With their senses temporarily expanded they could feel through the fog. A small group of soldiers had surrounded them. The smell of steel was carried on the mist and the breeze of their movement changed the air currents around them.

    Marx – “They are swift.”

Peter – “But they will not catch us off guard, get ready.”

The two wayward warriors engaged the unknown soldiers. Of course, they had an inkling of who these soldiers belonged to. They didn’t doubt that Damien had something to do with the attack.

Meanwhile Lidya and Lorenzo unwittingly stepped into a small clearing surrounded by icy cliffs. The mist cleared around them and a soldier stepped forward. This woman presented herself as Valeria, elite lancer of Damien’s army.

Valeria – “You there, stop your advance. So commands Valeria, elite lancer of my lord Damien. He mentioned you would eventually make your way here.”

    Lorenzo – “Oh no.”

Lidya – “Oh great, another of Damien’s lackeys.”

Valeria – “Heh, I hope your weapons are as sharp as your tongue. Face me! Troops, keep the other one busy!”

A small group of soldiers ran into the field from behind Valeria. They quickly charged Lorenzo and forced him to retreat. With Lorenzo busy with the enemy soldiers, Lidya had no choice but to engage Valeria. The latter gathered a number of sharp icicles around her and began to launch them at Lidya. Lidya jumped and then rolled while drawing her weapons.

Valeria – “You’ll never defeat me with those.”

Somewhat perplexed by her remark Lidya stubbornly lunged forward. Spear wielding Valeria was easily dodging Lidya’s attacks. Her side steps were perfectly timed, but Lidya wouldn’t give up. Then in one swift motion Valeria swiped at Lidya’s legs, forcing her to jump. Valeria followed up by hitting Lidya right in the stomach with the butt of the spear. Lidya recoiled and coughed, but was able to regain her composure.

Valeria – “See? Nothing to it. You don’t stand a chance. Give up and I will make your demise a quick one.”

Lidya – “No way this nobody is going to defeat me.”

Tapping into the energies she had felt through the short voyage through the currents around the Frigis Isles, Lidya channeled water magic into the Twins of Power. A quick transformation and now the great weapons had become a pair of short spears that could attach together at their base. The change in stance and battle style caught Valeria off guard. For Lidya it felt like a kind of weapon that she had wielded for a long time. She naturally weaved water spells along with her attacks. Swiping with the sharp point, spinning the spears around and thrusting them forward. The attacks were relentless. All Valeria could do now was block and dodge the attacks. Blow after blow Valeria’s grip on her lance wavered and with a powerful swipe of the combined lances Lidya disarmed Valeria. The enraged warrior would not give in though, she jumped back. Despite Lidya asking her to surrender, Valeria instead launched a multitude of ice spears, bursts of freezing gales and rising spires. Once again Lidya’s swift movement helped her regain some lost ground. One of the spears grazed her right shoulder. Without hesitation Lidya closed the remaining gap between them and stabbed Valeria through her left thigh.

Valeria – “Gah! You’ll… pay for that!”

Lidya – “Give up! You don’t stand a chance here.”

Valeria – “Oh? Maybe you should think your words through.”

A shadow loomed over them. When Lidya looked up she saw a massive icicle spire hovering above. Valeria used the energy from the previously cast mists to create this powerful spell. It was clear that she would not let them go. In an instant Lidya split her spear into twins again. She thrust the second spear into Valeria’s other leg, pinning her in place. As fast as she could Lidya then pivoted and ran away from her opponent. As the giant spire began to fall Lidya turned, launched a powerful flaming jet that not only pushed her away but burned Valeria where she stood. Once the spire had fallen on Valeria it quickly shattered as the energies that formed it dissipated. Using the magic she knew well, Lidya could recall her weapons to her. The spears flew into her hands as the soldiers around the area looked on, shaken to their core. They sounded the retreat just as Lorenzo gained the upper hand against his opponents. The partly burned and broken remains of Valeria emerged from the ice. She was barely alive but had enough strength to utter some final words.

    Valeria – “You… you’ve won. I see why… Damien… he’ll destroy…”

Before she could finish her body collapsed.

Lorenzo – “That was unpleasant to watch.”

Lidya – “Not as unpleasant as having to fight her. She was ruthless. I fear none of Damien’s forces will hesitate to kill us if they get the chance.”

Peter and Marx had defeated the soldiers that had trapped them in the mists. Although the mists had dissipated for a short while now, they were having a difficult time determining their current position. While backtracking to the shore a flare rose from a field below the glacier. When they investigated, they saw Lidya and Lorenzo waiting for them.

Lidya – “Took you long enough! Get down here!”

The group, now traveling together again, made their way to the nearby council village after finding the road.

Lidya – “Well? What’s next then?”

Marx – “We should be at the council village shortly.”

Peter – “And once there we can inform them of the situation.”

Lidya – “Then let’s get going. Damien’s forces are not holding back.”

The village of Norgar was quiet. Many of the people were frozen in place by powerful water magic. Lorenzo pointed to a crystal at the center of the village. It emanated all the water magic being channeled outward, maintaining the spell. With a fierce jab of a spear, Lidya broke the crystal and the spell was lifted. In a few moments the people there heralded them as heroes. One of the members of the council approached them. He identified himself as Huran.

Huran – “Thank you so much, you saved everyone. Who knows for how long we would have been frozen if not for your arrival.”

Lidya – “The trial prepared us well. If it wasn’t for that the spell would have affected us much sooner.”

Huran – “You must be a great master of water magic.”

Peter – “Lidya? Nah, she barely learned a little of it yesterday.”

Lidya – “You really didn’t have to say that.”

Huran – “All the more power to you. All of you have done well. Your combined efforts led you here. Now then, I fear you have news for us? Something to do with the world portal perhaps?

Lorenzo – “Indeed. The Entralian Council told us to venture to each trial council and inform them that we need to gather as many warriors as we can. A man named Damien has invaded Entralia and without enough forces we won’t stand a chance.”

Marx – “So far we have visited Fernal, both the Warp and the Mindscape and now here.”

Huran – “Damien’s timing was impeccable. By the time the World Portal stopped functioning most of the warriors who made it through the trial had left for Ixis. We do have a few left though. We might be able to pledge them to Entralia’s defense.”

Marx – “Good, we will find a way to contact you once we have gathered more information.”

Huran – “Then we will do our part to repair the communications crystals, they will be important in the future.”

    Peter – “What now?”

Lidya – “We should rest up and plan our next moves.”

Huran – “Please, go ahead and stay at the Inn near the edge of the village. Rest well and travel safely.”

The group did exactly that and rested from the battles they had fought. Tomorrow they will decide what to do next in their quest.

    Episode 14: The Entralian Council

While Lidya’s battle unfolded in the arena, Peter was on the outside fighting along with the guards against a battalion of Damien’s troops. When they were finally driven away a woman he instantly recognized ran past him. It was someone he thought long lost.

Peter – “Impossible… Eliza! Is that really you?”

    Eliza – “Who… speaks?”

Peter – “Turn around Eliza, it’s me Peter.”

Eliza – “Why are you here? You fight with that wench Lidya?”

Peter – “Of course, but, does this mean you fight for Damien?”

Eliza – “I do, as such, we have nothing else to talk about.”

    Peter – “Unbelievable.”

Eliza – “You would have joined me before, I won’t question why you decided to side with her. If we meet again, know that we are enemies.”

Peter – “Not looking forward to that.”

    Eliza – “Goodbye Peter…”

Eliza faded away in another shadowy mist. She sounded the retreat and the remaining soldiers from Damien’s army left.

Peter was lost in thought remembering that interaction he had with Eliza. On their way to the council chambers the group talked about the recent event.

Lidya – “Are you ok Peter?”

Peter – “Oh, uh, yes. I’ll be fine.”

Lorenzo – “We just had another brush with Damien’s forces, it is not to be taken lightly.”

Lidya – “After speaking with the council and before setting off again we should take a good rest. It’ll help to heal our wounds and recover from all the fighting.”

Marx – “Indeed, at least for the moment we should be fairly safe. I doubt Damien would risk another attack on Balancor.”

Although they were in relative safety now, it was imperative that they discuss their next steps with the council. As soon as they arrived they were greeted by the members.

Genus – “Welcome to the council chambers. May I introduce you to Aldus, Cain and Carla. Together we compose the main leadership of the council. The remainder of the members have left to rest for the night. Most of them will be apprised of whatever we discuss tonight.”

    Aldus – “Greetings.”

Cain – “Your skill in battle, both against the challenge masters and the forces of Damien, is impressive. I do wonder though, will it hold? Will it be enough?”

Lidya – “I will make sure it is.”

Carla – “You seem quite confident, I like that. We should test your loyalty next though, we’ve been burnt before.”

Genus – “Now, now. They have proven they work for the better of Entralia, or else they would not have taken the trials they have so far.”

Cain – “I shouldn’t have to remind you that this same council once had faith in Damien as well and look where that has gotten us.”

Marx – “Wait, the same Damien we’ve fought?”

    Aldus – “Sadly yes.”

Lorenzo – “How is that possible? What happened?”

Genus – “A hundred years ago Damien was part of this council. By that time he was a master of the elements. One of the greatest heroes to ever arise in Entralia. During those times rumors began to spread about a betrayal against the council. Many suspected that Damien’s power had become too much to control. In our judgment at the time it was deemed necessary to banish him. Obviously this led to further conflict.”

Aldus – “War broke out shortly after. Damien’s supporters wanted him back on the council and argued for its eventual dissolution. That’s when things got worse. A great many people banded together to defend the council. Fear drove us to push Damien to a precipice he could not turn back from.”

Cain – “In retrospect, we were arrogant in our decision. When we saw his power would be too much of a threat we opened the forbidden portal to Cythia and sent him through.”

Carla – “To avoid it being discovered again, the portal was destroyed. Then we made sure that history would remember us as the ones who saved the worlds and every book on Cythia be either destroyed or sealed.”

Lorenzo – “So, you are the cause of our ignorance about all this.”

Genus – “A shame we have carried.”

Aldus – “And that now haunts us.”

Cain – “The council has changed over the years, but we haven’t. We altered our longevity to make sure we could one day face him.”

Lidya – “Wait, how old are you?”

Genus – “I am well over one hundred years old Lidya. My appearance is a result of heavy experimentation with magic and spells.”

Aldus – “Despite such powerful magic we still do not possess the tools needed to face off against Damien. The very nature of Cythia allowed him to remain unchanged by time.”

Marx – “Does that mean he remains at his prime?”

Genus – “Yes. Even with our best efforts, time still took its toll. We may look like we’re in our fifties, but such tampering has made us unable to restore the balance of magic within us.”

Lidya – “So the balance is much more than just light and darkness.”

Carla – “Ah, you’re more observant than I thought. Yes indeed, the balance is a power of magic that also affects the other elements.”

Cain – “Damien was surely counting on us being long gone. At the very least we can teach someone else about our mistakes and hope you do not repeat them. You must find a way to defeat him. To counter his power, you will have to gain your own.”

Genus – “Damien’s idea of being some long lost deity stems from other ancient texts. Whether these were actually referencing him is a mystery.”

Lidya – “Deity or not, we can’t just sit by and let him take over Entralia.”

Genus – “Yes, this is why I had originally asked Marx to search for warriors. Sadly, there was no way to predict how Damien would proceed.”

Marx – “Sealing the world portals left us with few pickings.”

Lidya – “Hey, despite our low numbers I think we can still deal with him if we plan this properly.”

Genus – “That is what we’re counting on. You must continue to take the remaining trials. If at least one of you can master the remaining powers then you can stand against him.”

Cain – “As such, Lidya, you are our best bet. So far you have been the only one to skillfully navigate the trials and learn the elements.”

Marx – “I would add that her skill with the Twins of Power is unparalleled.”

Genus – “Lidya, Lorenzo, Peter and Marx, thank you for what you have done so far. I ask that you continue your journey. You should go to the north. There you can take the trial of water at the Frigis Isles.”

Carla – “The element that directly opposes the first element you learned will prove difficult. This will be an ample test of your abilities.”

Lidya – “I’ll take it and get through it, no problem.”

Peter – “Ever the optimist. I too will do my best and help wherever I can.”

Genus – “Be careful out there. Damien’s forces have surely spread beyond the area of his arrival.”

Lorenzo – “We will be on our guard.”

Lidya – “We should head out soon.”

Aldus – “Remember to rest here before leaving.”

Marx – “We will, let’s head to the inn. Thanks for everything.”

Genus – “We will do our part to continue to defend Balancor and the council.”

The group retired to a nearby inn. They rested what remained of the night and headed out at first light. Along the way to the Frigis Isles they would stop at hidden locations to rest some more. The challenges ahead meant that they needed to keep their energies up and their minds focused.

  • Seven Worlds – Ep13

    Episode 13: Trial of Balance

The trial of balance is at hand. Two important challenges await Peter and Lidya. They each have to defeat a master of light magic and a master of dark magic. Doing so will unlock the final component of the transmutation spell that will allow them to change their weapons into elements outside their mastery.

As the two challengers make their preparations, the first match is already set. Lidya will face off against the master of light magic, Kaltan. Meanwhile Peter will have his own battle shortly after. Before entering the arena Lidya is asked to successfully transform her weapons into the light variant, a staff or in her case twin staves. Lidya held her axes crossed in front of her. Energy flowed into the weapons and began transforming them. While turning them sideways the blades began to shrink and hilts of each ax merged together. It was an unusual feeling, Lidya had only used her twin weapons so far. Having a single staff felt off for her, but regardless she would continue. She stepped into the arena where Kaltan was waiting.

Kaltan – “Greetings. I see that you have successfully transformed your weapon to be aligned with light magic.”

    Lidya – “Easy. What’s next?”

Kaltan – “Confident are we? Let us begin then.”

Marx and Lorenzo were curious about how Lidya would fare, but they had to discuss their experiences with some of the council members. The rest of the members watched the arena intently and signaled the start of the match.

Kalyan readied his weapon. He moved slowly towards Lidya and began a series of attacks. For her part, Lidya was matching the attacks blocking them with the staff. Despite being adept at blocking she couldn’t get a proper grasp of her weapon to make attacks of her own. She felt restricted. For a few minutes the match continued without much progress from either side. Kaltan started to step up his attacks by interweaving light spells. Beams would occasionally shoot towards Lidya. In response she would have to either dodge the attack or try to block it with the staff. This was driving her to more vulnerable positions than she would like.

Kaltan – “My lady, are you holding back? Is this truly the extent of your power?”

Lidya – “I’ll show you power!”

By now Lidya was annoyed at not being able to make any progress. She focused her light magic into the staff and noticed it reacted. The Twins of Power were giving her a hint on how to proceed. So she went on the offensive. Strike after strike, Kaltan met every blow with a swift and decisive defense. What he didn’t expect was Lidya to begin interweaving her own light beams to her attacks. She was pushing him back, but he could still defend very well. On one occasion Kaltan lost his balance and Lidya was able to hit him on his right shoulder.

Kaltan – “Very good! Now things get more interesting!”

The master of light magic felt a rush. Recent challengers had not managed to hit him at all. The match continued. Kaltan created image echoes that could hit with light energy basically multiplying himself. Lidya had to be quick to respond, but some of the attacks pierced through her own defenses. She could feel how her energy was slowly lost. In her desperation she channeled even more energy into her staff. After repelling some of the echoes, she began to attack Kaltan himself. This caused the images to fade, as he needed to focus in order to maintain the spell. Then, to his surprise, Lidya split her staff into twin short batons. They are an extension of her mastery of the Twins of Power and the true form of their light alignment. This change allowed Lidya to gain an unexpected swiftness. Kaltan was having a very difficult time keeping up with Lidya, so he blasted the ground and pushed her away. Lidya wanted to finish the match. She used one of the batons and threw it with great force towards Kaltan. To counter he used a powerful light beam. The might of such a spell was great, it easily threw off the baton. What he didn’t expect was that the spell blinded him from Lidya’s follow up attack. She disarmed him. Energy was gathering around Lidya, she was preparing to unleash a barrage of spells. Before the spell could be cast, a bell rang and the match was declared over. The energy dissipated and Lidya used another spell to call the baton that was thrown back to her hand.

Kaltan – “What incredible mastery! My lady, you have done what few before have been able to. Not only have you shown me your great combat skill, you also have shown that the light can be blinding to all. Well done!”

Lidya – “I think I’ll be sore all over after this. That was a great challenge, thank you master Kaltan.”

Kaltan – “You’re welcome, master Lidya. Light be with you. Go get some rest.”

Lidya bowed and left the arena. The audience there was impressed with what they saw. Such was the intensity of the match that, for a moment, Marx, Lorenzo and the council members stopped their conversation to have a look at the combat. Most of the council was impressed.

Marx and Lorenzo remained with the council after completing their briefing. Soon, it was Peter’s turn to combat the master of light. He would not face Kaltan though, as the master of light was still recovering from the battle against Lidya. Another master of light magic stepped up for the match against Peter. It was another intense battle. Peter showed his mastery of spell casting, though he was not skilled in close combat. Early in the fight he was disarmed, but with the help of a series of spells he was able to overpower the master, earning him the win.

A new weapon transformation challenge was set for Lidya. After spending some time resting in a room she approached the arena once again. Before she left the doorway she started channeling dark magic into her weapons. Using her previous experience she quickly turned her weapons into small scythes, more commonly known as kamas. The judge at the doorway bid her to proceed. As she walked her focus was unflinching. At the center of the arena was a hooded figure that held a very large scythe. The weapon seemed unwieldy from Lidya’s perspective, perhaps it was more of a tool for intimidation, she thought. To her surprise, when the master removed the hood and threw it away, a woman stood there twirling the scythe as if it were weightless.

Lidya – “You sure you can carry that weapon?”

Master – “I can more than carry this. I will also deal with you here and now. The names Eliza and by the will of our lord Damien, you shall fall!”

    Lidya – “What?!”

Before Lidya could do anything else Eliza lunged at her. Lidya sidestepped the attack and moved away, she was shocked that anyone with ties to Damien would be able to make it to the trial and infiltrate it. The council still watching from their balcony was confused, they didn’t recognize this master of dark magic. They began to talk among themselves, unsure of what was happening. Meanwhile the sounds of battle could be heard outside the arena. Marx and Lorenzo rushed outside. Damien’s forces were attacking the village. Peter heard the commotion as well and ran out of the arena to aid the guards. As the battles unfolded, Eliza unleashed a powerful dark magic spell that created a protective dome, sealing her and Lidya inside it.

Eliza – “No one will interrupt me while I deal with you. They’re going to have to scrape you off the stone after I crush you!”

Lidya – “You can try as much as you want, in the end you’ll have to go back to Damien. You should send him my regards.”

The thunderous slam of Eliza’s scythe rumbled through the arena as she tried in vain to hit Lidya. Even if she dominated the weapon’s weight, she could still not swing fast enough to catch up with Lidya’s swift movement. Ghostly images started to appear and distract Lidya. They hounded her sight as much as they did her mind. A feeling of unease crept up upon her. It was followed up by dread and fear. Eliza had cast a spell to influence her emotions and Lidya fell prey to it. Without thinking too much on it, Lidya swung at the ghosts hoping to dispel them, but to no avail. They would vanish and return almost immediately. Eliza’s plan was to wear down Lidya’s mind and then strike when she was at her weakest. What she didn’t expect was that Lidya not only had a resilient mind, but a strong, unyielding will. Dark magic swirled around Lidya. She conjured her own shadow creatures to aid her. The apparitions were devious and horrifying to Eliza. A powerful dispelling force blasted away both the ghosts and shadows. When Eliza realized what was happening it was too late and Lidya was closing in fast. All the warrior could do was defend against the relentless strikes made by her opponent.

Lidya – “Clearly you didn’t plan this well enough.”

Eliza – “I will not be lectured by you!”

Their antagonisms seemed more of old worthy rivals than of deadly enemies. Lidya knew there was something odd about Eliza, but she could not identify what it was. Another wave of dark magic released by Eliza engulfed the arena. The entire dome fully darkened. No one on the outside could see into it. A new battle ensued, this time within Lidya’s mind. A powerful sense of defeat clouded her. Her body was frozen, knelt before Eliza.

Eliza – “This is where it all ends for you. A shame, I wonder what Damien saw in you to even suggest turning you into one of his generals.”

Lidya could not respond. Her mind was somewhere else. Little by little though she recognized the spell and slowly broke through. The world moved in slow motion around her. She saw as Eliza began to lift her scythe, ready to bring it down with full force. Lidya shifted the energy of the spell affecting her and absorbed it. The shadows empowered her kamas. Lidya rose to block the scythe and it was blown away by the impact. Eliza was disarmed, but not completely defeated. This agent of Damien still had a few more tricks, but so did Lidya. A chain of dark energy linked the two kamas and Lidya shifted her stance to a new one. Her combat was now a dance. Her strikes were non lethal, she knew that Eliza’s life was somehow worth sparing. Try as she might, Eliza’s spells no longer had any effect. Lidya had found a way to neutralize and redirect the energy. A beam of dark energy broke through the dome that covered the arena. When the energy dissipated, the council saw how Lidya was still standing and Eliza was barely holding on.

    Lidya – “Give up!”

Eliza – “I’ll have your head for this…”

Her one last move was to slam her palm to the ground causing a dense mist of shadows to arise. When the mist faded Lidya found herself standing alone.

    Lidya – “I guess that’s that.”

The council halted any further proceedings while on the outside of the arena Damien’s forces were repelled. A few hours later the council reconvened. They entered the arena along with Marx and Lorenzo. One of the members approached Lidya. He said his name is Genus.

Genus – “You and your companions have shown great bravery today. Lidya, despite Damien’s intervention I feel it would be unfair to deny you the title of master of balance. You defeated a powerful foe cloaked in dark magic. Now, one final task remains. Channel both dark and light magic into your weapons, use the transmutation spell.”

Lidya – “Thank you. Let’s see how this goes.”

Lidya did as council member Genus asked. She tapped into her magical energies and focused them on her weapons. The twin kamas floated just above her palms. Light and dark orbs flowed and transformed the Twins of Power. When the process was complete a pair of ringblades appeared. A unique and powerful kind of weapon that required a calm but focused mind. They cannot be easily held and require the user’s magical energies to be in sync to keep them aloft. Ringblades are also known as chakrams in some regions of Entralia.

Genus – “The trial is now complete. Come with me, we have much to discuss. All of you.”

Marx – “Yes sir. Well done Lidya.”

    Lorenzo – “Indeed, congratulations!”

Lidya – “Thanks guys. Has anyone seen Peter? He was supposed to take the next challenge, but with the trial suspended…”

Marx – “Come to think of it, I haven’t seen him for a while now.”

Lorenzo – “It is possible he is still outside. Perhaps dealing with straglers?”

Lidya – “Let’s go find him before we continue.”

Just as they were about to run out the arena, Peter arrived.

    Lorenzo – “Are you alright?”

Peter – “Yes, I’ll be fine. A bit shaken to be honest. I’ll tell you more later.”

    Marx – “Did something happen?”

Peter – “Let’s just say I saw an old friend that I thought was gone for good. She fights for Damien now.”

Lidya – “Was it Eliza by any chance?”

Peter – “How did you know?”

Lidya – “She was the one who battled me. During the fight I knew I felt an odd energy about her and it was not related to any of the spells she was using.”

Peter – “I see. You felt it too. Well, for now I am somewhat relieved that she lives. I must figure out what happened.”

Marx – “We can help you with that you know.”

Lidya – “Yeah Peter. Don’t think you’re alone in this.”

    Peter – “Thanks for that.”

Lorenzo – “We should go on, the council is waiting.”
